In a major step towards energizing America’s energy independence, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conditionally selected Standard Nuclear Power as the first company to participate in the newly launched Nuclear Fuel Line Pilot Program.
The initiative is designed to strengthen the domestic supply chain of nuclear fuel, a key component in the deployment of advanced reactor technologies.
Announced in July 2025 under President Trump’s executive order “Advanced nuclear reactor deployment for national security,” the initiative aims to reduce the dependence on foreign sources of abundant uranium while fostering a vibrant domestic market for nuclear fuel production.
Energy Secretary Chris Wright explained: “Advanced reactors will become a game-changer in the US, and with that, we need to manufacture the fuel for these reactors.
“The Department of Energy is partnering with DOE expertise and private sector innovation to strengthen the US nuclear supply line.”
Advanced nuclear fuel production starting in Tennessee and Idaho
Based in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Standard Nuclear Power will lead the development and operation of a new nuclear fuel production facility.
The project also utilizes Idaho’s infrastructure to support the production of Advanced Triso Fuel, a next-generation nuclear fuel important for high-performance reactors currently under development.
The company is entirely responsible for the construction, operation and ultimate decommissioning of the facility, but reactor developers source uranium ingredients through DOE’s High Assay Low Enriched Uranium (HALEU) Allocation Program.
Supports reactor pilots and US energy targets
The Fuel Line Pilot Program directly supports DOE’s Reactor Pilot Program, which aims to introduce at least three advanced reactor designs into operational importance by July 4, 2026.
These next-generation reactors are expected to use more efficient and safe nuclear fuels like the Triso, which will increase resilience and versatility in energy production.
This dual approach quickly tracks the research, licensing and deployment of innovative nuclear reactor technologies outside traditional government labs, opening the door for private investment and commercial scale deployment.
Why it is essential to expand US nuclear fuel capacity
Expanding domestic nuclear fuel capacity is a strategic national priority.
For years, the United States has relied on foreign countries, including hostile forces, for rich uranium and other important materials. This reliance introduces supply chain vulnerabilities, especially during geopolitical tensions.
By investing in US-based nuclear fuel production, the government guarantees a durable, safe, sovereign atomic fuel sources to support both civilian energy needs and defense applications.
It also strengthens America’s global leadership in clean energy innovation and supports carbon reduction targets through reliable low-emission nuclear power generation.
With the launch of the standard nuclear selection and the fuel line pilot initiative, DOE is laying the foundation for a resilient domestic nuclear fuel supply chain.
This move marks a critical step into the future, equipped with safe, sophisticated, American-made nuclear energy.
