Greater Lincolnshire Mayor Andrea Jenkins visited West Burton’s Step Fusion Site on Thursday to see first-hand how the UK’s leading fusion energy programme is set up to provide exciting new opportunities for Lincolnshire residents.

Mayor Jenkins toured Westburton’s Step Fusion Site and met with project leaders to discuss how the program is set up to create thousands of skilled construction and engineering jobs over the next 15+ years.

Targeting the first operations by 2040, the Step Program is already strengthening the development of local skills. Colleges and universities throughout the region are expanding fusion-related courses to help local people benefit from these new and advanced jobs.

On the West Burton scene, Mayor Jenkins commented:

“The impact on Lincolnshire’s fusion industry and the skills to serve the upcoming industry – job creation and growth – is incredible.”

A rich history of British power

During her visit, Mayor Jenkins observed the demolition of a cooling tower at a nearby former coal-fired power plant, one of the biggest demolitions of history types.

The proud legacy of being promoted from North Nottinghamshire to Britain led former workers from both Cottam and West Burton to witness this historic moment.

The demolition marks an important milestone in energy conversion in the region, as the region adjacent to Lincolnshire along the Trent River becomes a global hub for fusion energy.

How Step Fusion leads fusion fees

The first step fusion of this kind is the UK’s leading technology and infrastructure programme, building a prototype fusion power plant that demonstrates viable routes for net energy, fuel self-sufficiency and plant maintenance.

This paves the way for the potential development of future fusion power plants fleets around the world and for the commercialization of fusion energy.

This is achieved by producing an innovative spherical prototype tokamak power plant, demonstrating net energy. But the steps are more than tokamac technology. A great effort is incorporating design, site development and construction along with supply chain logistics and industry.

Fusion research and development could catalyze new ideas and technologies that will benefit multiple industries and help secure a future on this planet.

By combining government and business, inspiration and pragmatism, theory and practice, UK expertise and international influence, Stepfusion will make a difference to ensure a brighter UK future.

Improve your fusion skills throughout the East Midlands

A 20-year skill partnership has already been agreed between the UK Atomic Energy Agency and the East Midlands combination authorities.

This will lead to fusion skills and economic growth in both Lincolnshire and the wider East Midlands to fusion energy over the next five years, bringing £2.5 billion investment from the central government to fusion energy.

Once the prototype fusion energy plant is developed, StepFusion will work with Mayor Jenkins and other partners to help create local construction, engineering and fusion-related jobs.

Dr. James Cowan, Program Director at Step Fusion, concluded:

“The mayor’s support will help ensure that the opportunities created here in West Burton, from valuable jobs to new supply chains, not only revitalize the region, but continue the site’s proud heritage in energy generation, ensuring skilled employment and economic growth over the next decades.”
