“Civilians are trapped in misery around El-Fasher, as the RSF warns of even more “bloody.”
More than 540 people have been killed in North Darfur, Sudan, in just three weeks, as paramilitary groups strengthen their intermittent battle with Elfasher’s regional capital, according to the United Nations.
“The fears in Sudan are unknown,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volksar Tark said in a statement released Thursday on the devastating impact of the two-year civil war, indicating that 542 deaths over the past three weeks could be “a lot higher.”
Darfur in particular was a key battlefield in a brutal war that erupted between the Sudanese Army (SAF) and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023, killing tens of thousands of people and uprooting more than 12 million people, creating what the United Nations described as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
The RSF, which lost Khartoum last month, has launched multiple attacks on refugee camps near Elfasher and Zamzam and Abushuk in recent weeks, sparking hundreds of thousands of people, 60km (37 miles) across the desert to the town of Tawira.
The Sudanian presidential palace in Central Khartoum was bombarded by the RSF on Thursday, a military source told AFP news agency.
The Turks pointed to a new attack three days ago by El-Fasher and Abu Shouk’s RSF, which killed at least 40 civilians.
He said that after RSF issued further “bloody” warnings ahead of the “immediate battle,” he added that he was “confined in misery” around Elfasher, fearing further violence.
Turk’s statement was on the verge of the RSF taking control of the strategic city of Arnahod, West Kordofan, the gateway to the Darfur region held by the Sudanese army since the start of the conflict.
A report from Khartoum, Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan said that both sides view the city as important to gain an edge in the conflict.
“It is clear that the RSF will not launch an attack on its position in Darfur, especially as they say they want to seize the city of Darfur.
“Very disturbing”
The Turks also highlighted “reporting extrajudicial executions in Khartoum province,” saying it was “very intrusive.”
He described a video circulating on social media that showed at least 30 men in civilian clothing being rounded out and filmed by men armed with RSF uniforms in the Al Sarja region of Omdurman, the country’s second largest city.
In a subsequent video, “Commander RSF Field admitted to killing,” he said.
The video follows a “shocking report” of “extrajudicial execution of dozens of people accused of working with the RSF in South Hartzm in recent weeks,” according to the Turks, allegedly committed by the Al Bala bin Malik Brigade, the Al Bala bin Malik Brigade.
The SAF conflict led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and RSF’s Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Daglo divides Sudan into two, with the army shaking north and east, and the RSF controls most of Darfur and part of the south.
The Turks warned both leaders about the “devastating human rights impact” of the war, saying, “It’s been quite a while since this conflict ceases.”
