According to Bloomberg News, Tesla is ready to start selling electric vehicles in India. The company is about to open its first showroom in Mumbai, and delivery can begin as early as August, according to the report.
Hours after Bloomberg published the report, Tesla created a special account for its Indian business on CEO Elon Musk’s social media platform X. So far, I have one post on my account. There is an illustration of the Mumbai skyline with the caption.
Tesla is being pushed up to many new markets as it is running out of existing markets with its aging lineup of EVs. Earlier this year, the company began selling EVs in Saudi Arabia’s oil-rich countries.
India can be particularly difficult for several reasons, including price. Tesla will be subject to 70% import duties, as it will need to export already built vehicles to the country, according to Reuters. Tesla once had consultations with officials of the Indian government and was approached to implementing an agreement to build a factory there. However, the company never experienced any transactions.
