Chapel Hill, North Carolina (AP) – North Carolina Senate Republican Leader I resigned from the general meeting this week. He is the next lead lawyer at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
Prime Minister Lee Roberts University announced Thursday that Senate Majority Leader Paul Newton will be hired as adviser and deputy prime minister of the UNC System’s flagship campus.
Newton revealed in a news release Tuesday that he would step down from the Senate, which was not immediately made public “to pursue opportunities outside of the state government.” In a farewell speech in the Senate on Wednesday, Newton said he learned about work starting a few weeks ago, and was offered only on Monday.
Newton, who earned an undergraduate and law degree from UNC-Chapel Hill, is a retired Duke Energy employee and executive who joined the Senate in 2017 and became a majority leader after the 2022 election. He said he is also the father of four UNC Chapel Hill alumni.
Newton, who began work on April 21, said “it brings outstanding skills and deep experiences in law, business and government to our university,” and “I’m passionate about returning to my alma mater and contributing to our success.”
Republicans in Newton’s Cabals County Senate District will choose someone to fill their seats by the end of 2026. Senate Republicans meet to select a new majority leader who will be considered EU among the chiefs of GOP Senator Protempo Refilberger, the Chamber of Commerce’s top leader.
