WASHINGTON (AP) – The Trump administration has revoked its ability to register international students at Harvard University among them Escalate Battle Ivy League schools say thousands of current students must transfer to other schools or leave the country.

The Department of Homeland Security announced its actions Thursday. Harvard They created a dangerous campus environment by allowing “anti-American professional terrorist agitators” to attack Jewish students on campus. He also accused Harvard of coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party, saying it hosted and trained members of Chinese paramilitary groups in 2024.

“This means that Harvard University will no longer be able to register international students and existing international students will need to transfer or lose their legal status,” the statement said.

Harvard University has registered nearly 6,800 foreign students on its campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts, making up more than a quarter of its student organizations. Most of them are graduate students and come from over 100 countries.

Covered by Collin Binkley Harvard Nearly 10 years – mostly they live half a mile from campus.

Harvard called the behavior illegal and said it was working to provide guidance to students.

“This retaliation action threatens serious harm to Harvard’s community and our country and undermines Harvard’s academic research mission,” the university said in a statement.

The conflict stems from an April 16 request from Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem. The letter requested that Harvard take over the information Foreign students It may have something to do with them in violence and protests that could lead to their deportation.

In a letter to Harvard Thursday, Noem said the school’s sanctions were “an unfortunate consequence of Harvard’s failure to comply with simple reporting requirements.” Harvard prohibits hosting international students from the next 2025-26 years.

Noem said Harvard University could regain its ability to host international students if it produced a herd of international students within 72 hours. Her updated request requires all records, including audio or video footage of foreign students participating in protests or dangerous activities on campus.

“This administration is responsible for Harvard University’s promotion of violence, anti-Semitism and coordinating it with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus,” Noem said in a statement.

The administration has revoked Harvard’s certification. Student and Exchange Visitor Programgrants schools the ability to sponsor international students and obtain visas and attend US schools.

Noem’s sanctions open a new front for the Trump administration’s fight against Harvard. Harvard, the country’s oldest and wealthiest university, was the first university to openly ignore the White House’s demands to limit White House protests and eliminate diversity, equity and inclusive policies.

The federal government responded and forced it by cutting $2.6 billion in federal grants at Harvard University Self-fund Many of its vast research projects. President Donald Trump says he wants to strip the university Tax-free status.

Much of Harvard’s punishment came through the federal anti-Semitism task force, which stated that the university had failed to protect Jewish students from harassment and violence amid a national wave of Palestinian protests.

Homeland Security officials reflected these concerns in their announcement Thursday. It provided examples of findings that many Jewish students reported facing discrimination and prejudice on campus, including a recent internal report at Harvard University.

It also harnessed concerns that Congressional Republicans raised about relations between American universities and China. Homeland Security authorities said Harvard University provided training for the recent New Jiang Production and Construction Corps in 2024. As evidence, it provided a link to a Fox news article, which cited a letter from House Republicans.

Ted Mitchell, chairman of the US Council of Education, called his latest action an overreach of “illegal and protected my heart.”

“I’m worried that this will have a very calm effect on international students who want to come to America for education,” he said.

The Trump administration is leveraging a system to track the legal status of international students as part of a broader attempt to crack down on higher education. In the past, mostly managed databases Implementation toolsbecause immigration officers revoked the student’s legal status directly within the system.

These efforts were challenged in court, leading to a national injunction that would restore the status and block the administration from pursuing further termination.
