The UK targets Regulation’s Apple and Google mobile platforms

The UK’s Competitive Markets Agency (CMA) announced on Wednesday a proposal to give Apple and Google’s mobile platforms a “strategic market situation.” This is to allow regulators to create rules that can change how the app store works and change how mobile software works.

This move is designed to create a more open and competitive environment for app economy and user choices. However, Apple and Google pushed back the proposal. Apple says the changes will undermine your security and privacy. The final decision on the matter will arrive in October after the two companies present their lawsuits.

Once the proposal passes, the CMA will be given the ability to address issues such as in-app purchase fee rates, app review process, app rankings, limited developer access to certain technologies, and default settings that could reduce competition. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has been involved in antitrust laws against the high-tech giants, but has expressed disappointment with the proposed roadmap because he doesn’t allow competition for mobile app stores like the Epic Games store.
