The United States is taking another crucial step towards rebuilding the future of its nuclear weapons.

In a move designed to enhance domestic energy security and accelerate the deployment of next-generation nuclear reactors, the Ministry of Energy (DOE) has announced its new commitment to deliver Haleu fuel, a key component of advanced nuclear technology.

The latest round allocation will provide three US organizations with the enriched uranium needed to test groundbreaking designs and establish a long-term fuel supply chain that can promote revival of the US nuclear.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright explained: “President Trump is prioritizing the jumpstart of a true nuclear energy renaissance, and the DOE is doing everything in its power to achieve this ambitious agenda, including increasing access to the materials needed to produce sophisticated nuclear fuels.

“We give the private sector the increase necessary to succeed, while reducing our dependence on foreign-made minerals. The Haleu allocation program is a victory for the economy, energy security and the American people.”

What is Haleu Fuel?

Haleu stands for high assay low enriched uranium, a specialized nuclear fuel enriched from 5% to 20% uranium 235, higher than the typical 3-5% enrichment used in nuclear reactors today.

Its unique properties make it ideal for advanced nuclear designs with smaller footprints, longer operating cycles and improved efficiency compared to current technology.

Many next-generation microreactors, high-speed reactors, and research reactors need to function.

However, since Haleu is not currently produced by US suppliers, it is making DOE’s efforts to establish a domestic fuel line that is important for both innovation and national security.

Why strengthening the Haleu supply chain in the US is important

Currently, most worlds’ Haleu abilities are concentrated in Russia. This is trust that poses serious geopolitical and supply chain risks.

Establishing its own sources ensures that American companies developing nuclear technology do not rely on foreign enemies for their most important inputs.

The domestic Haleu supply chain is as follows:

Enabling energy security by reducing reliance on imports. Supports innovation by providing timely access to test fuels. It creates jobs for uranium enrichment, fuel production and nuclear reactor development. It strengthens US leadership in the global nuclear market and competes with Russia and China’s progress.

New Haleu Fuel Commitment

The second round of allocations for DOE targets three selected recipients in the Haleu Availability Program, a 2020 initiative designed to ensure supply for private use.

The company includes:

Antares Nuclear, Inc. – Advanced microreactor design fuel based on DOE’s nuclear reactor pilot program by July 4, 2026. Standard Nuclear, Inc. – Establish Triso fuel production lines to support both pilot programs and other advanced Triso fuel reactors. Abilene Christian University / Natura Resources LLC – Fueling a molten salt research reactor currently under construction in Texas.

DOE now has started contracts with these organizations and there are likely some delivery arrivals later this year.

Building advanced reactor momentum

Earlier this year, DOE allocated the first Haleu supplies to five companies, requesting three deliveries in 2025.

The latest commitment illustrates the continuing developments of the authorities, called a deliberate, gradual approach to ensuring steady access to fuel for research, demonstrations and commercial deployment.

By expanding Haleu’s availability, the United States is laying the foundation for a new era of nuclear power generation, combining resilience, innovation and clean energy to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

As demand for sophisticated reactors grows, DOE plans to continue expanding its allocation to additional companies.

This progressive approach is expected to help build a sustainable, full-scale domestic Haleu production industry, paving the way for cleaner forces, stronger national security and US leadership in nuclear innovation.
