Thermo Fisher Scientific introduces the Orbitrap Exploris™ EFOX mass detector, the first high-resolution accurate mass (HRAM) Orbitrap system designed specifically for food safety testing and environmental analysis.

A new platform designed to tackle global pollution challenges allows laboratories to identify and quantify contaminants such as PFAS, pesticides, and other emerging toxins with unprecedented precision.

As food and water safety concerns grow around the world, Orbitrap Exploris EFOX enables laboratories to generate richer data faster, allowing scientists to assess health risks earlier and with greater confidence.

Lidija Rajcevic, Vice President and Head of Environmental and Food Safety at Thermo Fisher Scientific, explains: “Environmental and food safety laboratories face increasing pressure to deliver faster and more accurate results under tight budgets and stringent regulatory requirements, and the Orbitrap Exploris EFOX significantly reduces the workload for testing for PFAS, pesticides, and other contaminants.

“By providing an easy-to-use high-resolution mass detector, more laboratories can perform critical full-scan, accurate mass-resolution data monitoring and provide local testing across more areas of concern, ultimately accelerating quality control and making our environment and food safer.”

Built specifically for everyday workflows

Unlike traditional high-resolution systems adapted from research applications, Orbitrap Exploris EFOX is purpose-built for everyday laboratory use.

It combines research-grade performance with simple operation, allowing users to go from sample to results within minutes while maintaining excellent data quality.

Powered by Orbitrap technology, long recognized for its role in proteomics and small molecule analysis, the system provides ultra-sensitive detection of trace contaminants such as PFAS.

Streamlined and automated workflows reduce complexity and operational overhead, giving more labs access to high-level testing.

Improving standards for environmental and food analysis

The new Orbitrap Exploris EFOX captures comprehensive, full-scan, high-resolution data from every sample, enabling retrospective analysis without the need for reinjection.

This capability allows laboratories to easily identify newly recognized compounds and remain compliant with evolving global regulations.

Preconfigured workflows for key contaminants eliminate months of method development, helping labs achieve compliance faster and reduce costs.

Integration with the Chromeleon™ Chromatography Data System (CDS) provides an intuitive interface to simplify data processing and reporting, minimizing training time and accelerating results delivery.

Supports broader testing capabilities

Thermo Fisher also continues to advance its triple quadrupole solution with the TSQ Altis™ Plus EFOX MS, a complementary platform optimized for environmental and food testing.

These innovations represent a major advance in food safety testing and set new benchmarks for speed, accuracy, and data completeness in contaminant detection.
