Will humanoid robots do our housework? It may happen soon. Chinese robotics company UniX AI has announced the release of Panther, a humanoid service robot designed to assist with common household chores.
The robot weighs 176 pounds (80 kilograms), stands 5 feet 3 inches (1.6 meters) tall and can operate for up to 12 hours on a single charge, engineers said in a statement. In addition to releasing a promotional video showing Panther performing household tasks such as making the bed, cleaning countertops and toilets, and cooking breakfast, UniX AI has begun commercial distribution of the model, suggesting it is ready for deployment in real-world environments.

UniX AI representatives say Panther uses two of the world’s first mass-produced 8-degree-of-freedom bionic arms to complete its chores, giving the robot 34 degrees of freedom at its joints.
At the end of the arm is an intelligent “gripper” that adapts to different shapes and sizes of items that the robot can grasp. In the promotional video, Panther is seen holding a plastic spatula when frying eggs and a toilet brush when cleaning the toilet. At the end of the video, the robot washes its hands in the sink and wipes its gripper with a bath towel.
Panther’s body can extend vertically 31 inches (80 centimeters) to access hard-to-reach areas from high ledges to the ground. See your surroundings using binocular vision and a webcam.
Unlike other humanoid robots that rely on leg locomotion and are more prone to falls, Panther’s omnidirectional four-wheel steering and four-wheel drive (4WS+4WD) chassis allows it to move smoothly in a variety of indoor environments.
It uses both lidar and ultrasonic sensors to determine its spatial position and moves at approximately 6 feet (1.89 m) per second. This is about the same speed as brisk walking. UniX AI representatives said in a statement that engineers were less focused on building the “most human-like robot” and more focused on ensuring that the model could reliably perform a variety of tasks with stability and flexibility.

In early tests and demonstrations, Panther handled multiple prompts, including making tea, cleaning the kitchen, and operating a washing machine. To achieve this, Panther runs on UniX AI’s unified technology stack. It includes imitation learning and long-term task planning, allowing you to perform tasks seamlessly one step at a time.
Engineers designed Panther for a wide range of uses, including not just domestic work, but support in retail, reception, guided tours, elderly care, companionship, research, education and more.
