Mel Mitchell isn’t afraid of critical opinions.
The Atlanta-based stand-up comedian, actor, and content creator caught our attention this year with his sharp commentary and quick wit. She is also one of Mash101, a list of voices shaping digital culture today.
“Whether she’s capturing a pop culture moment or recreating a familiar online interaction, the overall flow is the same,” writes Mashable’s Crystal Bell. “The joke is accurate because the observation is accurate.”
Mitchell lets us talk about “the black mom in ‘The Magic School Bus,'” director Ryan Coogler’s endearing caricature. Describing herself as a “black muggle mom,” Mitchell maintains a continuous stream of content based on the Harry Potter world.
Mitchell’s Potter-inspired comedy really took off after a video of Mitchell as a black Hogwarts teacher went viral. Subsequent videos, such as Muggle Mothers at Hogwarts Parent-Teacher Conference, have also gained widespread support. (In case you were wondering, Volume 3, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, is Michelle’s favorite.)

Mitchell also added “acting” to his resume this year, appearing in KevOnStage’s “Churchy,” “The Hospital” and “The Airport.”

You often talk about natural hair in your content, what are your favorite hair products?
I love Camille Rose setting foam, Bask & Lather edge control, a spray bottle of water, and the green Eco Style gel.
How has being a “pastor’s kid” (as you put it) influenced your comedy?
I always say being a comedian is a ministry. Comedy and preaching are the same skill set, so I think it’s passed down genetically! That and my hilarious life experiences inspired me to succeed in the comedy world.
Who is your ideal audience?
My ideal audience consists of Black women and the Black LGBTQIA community. They just get me!
What do you like about your job?
I really enjoy making people laugh and spreading joy. My favorite thing is when I tell a super niche joke and it reaches a few people who actually get it.
