Tinder activity spikes due to World Cup

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is underway, but international tourists are enamored with American commonplaces. They also seem to be interested in Tinder, another American export.

Compared to the same period last year, the dating app saw an increase in swipes, likes and matches across World Cup cities. In the US, the number of users has increased by more than 15%, swipe activity has increased by approximately 25%, and the number of matches has increased by approximately 60% compared to June 2025.

Mexico and Canada are also feeling the love, with an overall increase.

According to internal data from June 11 to 16, the app saw an average 47% increase in international users in match cities. This is for host cities and match days, and after taking normal summer travel into account. Examples of the biggest spikes in activity include +80% in Monterrey before and after the Sweden vs. Tunisia game, +74% in Guadalajara before and after the Korea vs. Czech Republic game, and +47% in Boston before and after the Iraq vs. Norway game.

Domestic users are also clearly showing a desire to achieve their goals, with an increase of 22%.

Tinder is also increasingly using Passport mode, which allows users to swipe in locations other than their current location. According to Tinder, the New York/New Jersey area, Los Angeles and Miami are the top host cities for passport inflows. Top countries of origin, excluding host countries, include the United Kingdom, Brazil, Thailand, and Nigeria.

It’s no surprise that sports stimulate the desire for dating (or companionship). During the Olympics, Tinder users often try to virtually enter the Olympic Village using Passport mode.
