BERKLEY, Calif. (AP) — The Trump administration began an investigation into the University of California, Berkeley on Friday, becoming the latest university to be targeted by the federal government, focusing on foreign funding.
The investigation revives criticism of the university’s partnership with Tinua University in China several years ago. He’ll be coming after President Donald Trump earlier this week I signed the series of executive orders focused on universities that he considers as the liberal enemy of his political agenda.
One order called for the more difficult enforcement of Section 117, a federal law that requires universities to disclose foreign gifts and contracts worth more than $250,000.
The Ministry of Education’s Advisory Office investigates “the obvious failure of UC Berkeley’s complete and accurate disclosure of the large amounts of funds received from foreign sources.”
Berkeley, California, has denied the government’s claims and for the past two years, “UC Berkeley has been helping out federal inquiries regarding 117 reporting issues, and will continue to do so.”
The sector cited a 2023 media report that it had not disclosed “never millions of dollars in funding from foreign governments” since 2023, but did not mention the country.
In May 2023, the Daily Beast reported that Berkeley, California won $220 million from the Chinese government, and that the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Tissin in China would open in Shenzhens in 2014 to build the “Tin Tin Belkelly Shwein Shenzhen Institute,” focusing on “strategic industries.”
last year, Report Republicans on the House Selection Committee on the Communist Party of China discovered that US taxes contributed to the advancement of Chinese technological and military modernization when US researchers collaborated with Chinese peers in regions such as hypersonic weapons, artificial intelligence, nuclear technology, and semiconductor technology.
In response to the report, Berkeley, California, said Berkeley researchers “will be engaged in research where results are always openly and widespread around the world,” while the school said “we are not aware of any research conducted by TBSI Berkeley faculty members who have been conducted for other purposes.” The university also said it would unleash the partnership.
The university said Friday it no longer partners with TBSI.
Last week, the Department of Education called for records from Harvard University on foreign financial ties over the past decade, accusing them of submitting “incomplete and inaccurate disclosures.” That’s what Trump administration is like Harvard and Sparring It refuses to accept the university’s refusal to accept a list of requests for pro-Palestinian protests and its handling of diversity, equity and comprehensive efforts.
