Trump investigates whether Maine is withholding gender transitions from parents

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — President Donald Trump’s management is investigating Maine with allegations that dozens of school districts in the state are violating federal law by withholding information about student gender transitions from parents.

The U.S. Department of Education said it began an investigation on Friday. California Department of Education. In both cases, the Federal Education Agency said the state could be violating the privacy laws of family education rights.

The Federal Bureau said in a letter to the Maine Department of Education it is investigating whether the agency “played a direct or indirect role” in the adoption of a district withholding student records from parents.

This is the latest conflict between Maine and the Trump administration, about the role of transgender students in school and high school sports. A spokesman for the Maine Department of Education declined to comment Friday.

The Federal Education Agency said in a statement that some main districts have policies that allow schools to create “gender plans” that support students’ “transgender identities,” and that they have heard reports that claim that those plans are not educational records and that parents are not accessible.

“Parents and guardians have the right to access their child’s educational records and guide and protect their child’s mental, emotional and physical well-being. The opposite policy is illegal and immoral.” I’ll dismantle it.

The Trump administration has begun investigating how Maine handles transgender student issues in schools Public Disputes Between Trump and Democrat Janet Mills in February. The Principal Association and the high school said this week that they would not comply with the proposed agreement to ban transgender athletes in women’s sports. The Maine Education Department declined to comment on Thursday’s proposal.

The U.S. Education Bureau said Friday it sent broader guidance to the chairs and supervisors of agencies receiving federal funds on its mandate to comply with the Family Education Rights Privacy Act.

The agency said in a statement that compliance “schools must allow parents to review all student educational records, including documents relating to the student’s “gender identity.”
