Trump’s latest comments say China, North Korea and Russia will create a “Space Force Race.”
US President Donald Trump says he has told Canada that he must pay $61 billion “if they remain a separate, but unequal nation” to be part of his proposed Gold Dome missile defense system.
In a Truthsocial post, Trump claims Canada wants to be “part of our amazing Golden Dome system,” and is free to access when joining the US.
Joining the proposed defense system would cost Canada “zero dollars if they become our precious 51st state,” Trump added, “they are considering the offer!”
Trump’s post came for a rare royal speech that the monarch highlighted in his sovereignty in a time of “dangerous and uncertainty” and in an exhortation to the US president’s nation to become part of the United States.
After the King’s speech, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told Canadian public broadcaster CBC that he hopes Canada will join Liam Europe by July 1 to reduce its dependence on the US for weapons.
Canada didn’t respond immediately to Trump’s latest comments, but Carney previously confirmed that his country has “high-level” consultations with the United States on defense systems issues.
Funding and timeline are uncertain
In total, Trump claims that the Golden Dome System will cost around $175 billion and will be completed by the end of his current term in 2029, but defense industry experts have questioned the feasibility of this timeline and budget.
Trump hopes to secure the system’s first $25 billion funding through an incredible “big, beautiful bill” rising to vote in the Senate after passing a Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives last week.
The bill promotes military and border enforcement spending while cutting funding for social programs, including Medicaid and food aid, which helps tens of millions of low-income Americans.
The Golden Dome is modeled after the Israeli iron dome. Israeli Iron Dome also receives large amounts of funds from the United States, including $500 million per year in maintenance costs.
Since Israel is just the size of New Jersey, one of the small states in the United States, it is unclear how Trump will expand the iron dome to cover the entire United States.
The iron dome is designed to target short-range missiles in the 1,000km range (approximately 620 miles), but the main threat to the US could come from long-range ballistic and high-sonic missiles.
Golden Dome creates “Space Arm Races”
China, North Korea and Russia are all criticising Trump’s plan to put weapons in space, which the US president first described in detail last week.
China’s Foreign Ministry responded quickly, with spokeswoman Maonin saying the plan “will increase the risk that space will become a battlefield, promote the arms race and undermine international security.”
“The United States is obsessed with putting its own interests first and seeking its own absolute security.
North Korea’s Foreign Ministry also responded, saying the United States is “bent into hell with its movement into militarized outer space.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Maria Zakhalova said on Tuesday that the Golden Dome Project undermines the foundation of “strategic stability” that involves creating a global missile defense system.
According to the Russian state communications agency TASS, Zakharova said the development of the Golden Dome would also lead to the development of “infrastructural means to ensure missile destruction and use before launch.”
“This is already a literal manifestation of the US highly dangerous doctrinal course to provide so-called preventative prevention, but essentially the first strike,” she said.
