The US has designated eight Latin American criminal and drug trafficking groups as “global terrorist organizations” amid escalating rhetoric from President Donald Trump.

In a federal registration notice filed Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said without providing details that the group “has risked committing terrorist acts or foreign policy that threatened the US citizens or national security?” He said he said he said. , or the US economy.”

Some experts say that open-ended languages have been seen as out of scope, including military strikes on Mexican territory and stripping away due-process immigration. They say that Trump can be used to justify.

The eight groups named in Wednesday’s notice are Trende Aragua, Malasal Battle Cha (also known as MS-13), Cartel de Cinaroa, Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, Cartel Unidos, Cartel de, Cartel del Golfo, This is Ranueva Famiacana.

While these groups engage in acts of violence and exploitation, experts say cartels are usually motivated by business interests instead of political or ideological motivations caused by terrorist groups .

“The United States has already taken a lot of action against these groups. They investigate them, sanction them, and prosecute their members in court. The Washington Office in Latin America, a US-based research group. “We’re a great place to go,” said Stephanie Brewer, director of the Mexican program at WOLA.

“I think it’s a concern that this is coming in the context of rhetoric from the White House that combines migration with crime, drugs and now terrorism.”

Immigration crackdown

Many immigrants passing through Latin America’s Mexico and other countries are forced to pay fees and “taxes” to criminal groups that similarly force immigrants and smugglers.

Will Freeman, a fellow Latin American Studies on the Council of Foreign Relations, says the administration can use facts to argue that immigrants provide material and financial support to terrorist organizations.

“Everyone can blame them, from immigrants paying smugglers to Mexican businesses being forced to pay a ‘protective fee’ to provide material or financial support to terrorist organizations,” he said. Ta.

He also points out that one of the most powerful criminal groups in America, Brazil’s first capital headquarters, is not listed.

“I think the sloop line here means that a lot of the nominated groups are involved in the immigration route,” he said.

The White House frequently uses irregular migration portrayals as “invasions” to promote a hard-line approach to immigration.

The Trump administration has previously threatened to use the alien enemy law of 1798. This is a law that allows the president to immediately expel “enemies” at war, and will carry out massive deportations in the United States.

Earlier this month, Trump also announced that sudden tariff levies on Mexico, Canada and China (another promise from the presidential campaign) would “have been a “national” of gang members, smugglers, human traffickers, illegal drugs and illegal drugs.” He said it is necessary to deal with the emergency. All sorts of drugs that come to the US.

Strike in Mexico

The designation of terrorists also renews concern that the United States can carry out military operations on Mexican territory.

“Trump has previously said that the Mexican government has a “extremely unbearable alliance” with the cartel. Does this mean that the US believes the Mexican government is working with terrorism? ” asked Brewer.

Following the announcement of the order, Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest man and Trump’s ally who embraced his naturalist vision, said in a social media post that the order “drone” was the group. He said it means he is eligible for a strike.

But both Brewer and Freeman say fighting criminal groups that cause violence and conflict across the Americas is a valuable goal, but it takes more than harsh stories and military firepower to do so. .

“To chase these groups, we have to chase after their finances, their arms supply and their corrupt partnerships with government authorities,” Freeman said. “And if you choose to fight governments across Latin America, that would seem to be against those efforts.”
