VSCO expands AI editing capabilities and supports RAW files

Video editing app VSCO adds a set of new AI image editing tools, support for high-resolution RAW files, non-destructive editing, and content-aware region detection.

The AI ​​tools will be housed in a new tab called “AI Labs,” which will also offer AI-powered object removal capabilities, similar to Google’s and Apple’s own products.

You can highlight objects in an image or draw a circle around them. VSCO replaces the object with what it thinks matches the background. The company said it uses “intelligent region detection” to blend the background after objects are removed, without affecting resolution or color.

Unlike most AI-powered removal tools that sometimes leave artifacts, VSCO claims that its tool is more accurate and preserves details, making it more suitable for professional photographers.

The company said it will soon release another AI-powered feature called Upscale, which increases image resolution and sharpens details without sacrificing detail or composition.

VSCO uses Black Forest Labs’ FLUX.1 Kontext model to power these capabilities.

AI Labs features are available in VSCO’s Pro tier in the VSCO Studio app on iOS for $12.99 per month or $60 per year. The company does not place a limit on the number of times users can use AI Labs features.

“Since our founding, VSCO has supported authentic creative expression and provided photographers with many ways to achieve the success they desire. We see how much AI is impacting photography, and we are focused on providing our community with AI tools specifically designed to help photographers achieve creative excellence while respecting their art,” VSCO CEO Eric Whitman said in a statement.

The company is enhancing its toolset to be more competitive with editing tools. In May, it launched an AI-powered whiteboard that lets photographers and potential clients collaborate on projects, and last year it launched a marketplace to match photographers with clients.
