Popular messaging platform WhatsApp has added a new AI-based feature that leverages internal solution meta AI to summarise unread messages in chat.

Called a Message Summary, this feature is currently rolling out in English to US users, with plans to bring it to other regions and languages later this year.

“Using meta AI, you can quickly summarise Unread messages in chat personally, so you can know what’s going on before reading the details of unread messages,” WhatsApp said in the post.

Message summary is optional and is disabled by default. The meta-owned service said users can enable “advanced chat privacy” and choose chats they can share to provide AI-related features.

Cybersecurity

Most importantly, private processing is made possible by private processing. This started in April as a way to enable AI features in a way that provides privacy.

Private processing is designed to handle AI requests within a secure environment called Confidential Virtual Machine (CVM) on the cloud by establishing a secure application session between a user’s device and a trusted execution environment (TEE) over a trusted HTTP (OHTTP) connection.

The company has reiterated that the technology does not require third parties, including meta and WhatsApp to display actual message content to generate summary.

“No one else in the chat can see you summarizing an unread message,” it said. “This means privacy is always protected.”

The development comes when the U.S. House of Representatives adds WhatsApp to a list of banned apps from government-issued devices, citing security concerns.
