The Trump administration has unleashed an unexpected social media attack on Democratic opponents, with the White House and many other government agencies joining in on Blue Sky on Friday.

In its first post, the new White House account uploaded a highlight reel of footage and memes of President Trump with the message: “What’s up, Blue Sky? We thought you might have missed some of our greatest hits, so we put this together for you.”

Other government agencies, including the Departments of Homeland Security, Commerce, Transportation, Interior, Health and Human Services, State, Army, and Transportation, all appeared to follow the White House’s lead by creating new Bluesky accounts, and all quickly posted messages attacking Democrats over the ongoing government shutdown.

“We heard this was a great place to have an open and honest conversation, so we came here to discuss how the Democratic administration’s shutdown is hurting our country on the world stage,” the State Department wrote. (Legal experts suggest similar statements from government agencies would likely violate the Hatch Act.)

The messages were generally written in a jovial, troll-like tone, suggesting that the administration’s social media team anticipated and even expected negative reactions on the social network widely known as a leftist alternative to Elon Musk’s X. And Bluesky users delivered, the White House’s initial post bringing up President Trump’s relationship with notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein received a lot of reactions.

“They’re targeting this place because they can’t control the people there and they’re going crazy,” The Onion CEO Ben Collins wrote.

At the same time, many of Blue Sky’s popular accounts urged their followers to simply “block and move on,” with comedian Paul F. Tompkins declaring that “blocking the White House is weirdly fun.”

Less than 48 hours after joining, Whitehouse has already become one of the most blocked accounts on Bluesky. According to ClearSky, which tracks Bluesky’s blocking statistics, the White House account has been blocked by about 91,000 accounts, while being followed by just 10,000. The only account blocked by more Bluesky users is that of Vice President JD Vance, who rejoined in June.

Although the various new government accounts had not reached that height by Sunday morning, they accounted for all five of the most blocked accounts in the past 24 hours. Other right-wing accounts appeared to be bragging about Blue Sky following the Trump administration and being widely blocked.
