Xai launches an API for generating images

Elon Musk’s AI company Xai has added image generation capabilities to its API.

At the moment, only one model is the “GROK-2-IMAGE-1212” API. Given a caption, the model can generate up to 10 images per request in JPG format (limited to 5 requests per second).

For comparison, AI startup Black Forest Lab, which Xai partnered last year to start image generation on mask social network X last year, charged about $0.05 per image. Another popular image model provider, IDEOGRAM, charges $0.08 on the high end.

Xai points out in its documentation that the API doesn’t support image quality, size or style adjustments, and requests prompts are subject to revisions by the “chat model.”

Xai, which launched its API in October 2024, appears to be looking for a meaningful revenue stream to enhance training and development of flagship models like the Grok 3.

Indicating other ambitions, Xai is in the process of acquiring a generative AI video startup and expanding its Memphis-based data centers used to train and run a variety of models.
