Spotify on Wednesday upgraded its AI DJ feature available to premium subscribers, adding several new features, including the ability to send requests by typing instead of just voice commands.
The feature supports requests in both English and Spanish, and Spotify’s Spanish DJ, DJ Livi, now accepts music requests.
The AI DJ feature was updated earlier this year, and instead of just playing songs that Spotify thinks you’ll like, it can now also accept voice requests. However, this feature was only available to English AI DJs until today.
Due to the growing popularity of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini, sending text messages with an AI assistant is now a common activity. These services allow multimodal input. This means you can have a conversation, text message, or upload an image or file as part of your request. As many people have become accustomed to switching back and forth between input methods, Apple has rolled out a version of the Siri assistant that can also be accessed by text.
Given that users often use streaming services while on the go, commuting, or in quiet spaces where they don’t want to disturb others by issuing voice commands, it’s a natural next step for Spotify’s AI capabilities to also accept text input.
According to Spotify, in addition to the new texting feature, AI DJs now also offer personalized prompt suggestions to give users some inspiration if they don’t know what they want to listen to next.
To access DJ, simply search for the term “DJ” on Spotify and press play to begin a curated selection of music. If you want to change the music, tap the DJ button at the bottom right of the screen and provide suggestions via voice or text.
Spotify says DJs can respond to requests that combine genres, moods, artists, or activities. This feature is currently available in English and Spanish in over 60 markets around the world.
