The Ukrainian president has said there are no decisions on how to end the Russian war in his country without consulting with Kiev.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy updated his request that it be included in Kyiv’s talks on how to end the Ukrainian war in Russia after the US and Russia agreed to form a team to negotiate a halt to the fighting.
Ukraine was not represented at a meeting between the US and Russian authorities in Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh on Tuesday.
“No one wants to decide anything behind our backs… we can’t make a decision without Ukraine on how to end the war in Ukraine,” Zelensky visited Turkie. Sometimes I told reporters.
He added that he was scheduled to travel to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday but postponed his trip to Riyadh until March 10, as he did not want “accidentality.”
The meeting in Riyadh was the first time we and Russian officials met in February 2022 to discuss how to stop the fighting that escalated in the full-scale invasion of Russia’s Ukraine.
The US Secretary of State and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov “we agreed to appoint each high-level team to begin working on the path to end the conflict in Ukraine as soon as possible,” the US State Department said.
Washington also added that the side had agreed to “establish a consultation mechanism” to address “stimulants” in US-Russia relations.
US national security adviser Mike Waltz told reporters in Riyadh that war must achieve a permanent purpose, including negotiations on the territory.
“The real reality is that there is a discussion about territory and there is a discussion about security assurance,” he said.
Russia strengthens its demands
However, a meeting in the Saudi Arabian capital was underway, but Russia tightened its demands.
The Kremlin said Ukraine has the “right” to join the European Union, not the NATO military alliance.
Ukraine has consistently requested NATO membership as the only way to ensure Kyiv’s sovereignty and independence from its nuclear military neighbours.
Maria Zakharava, a spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NATO has refuted to reporters in Moscow that Kiev will take part in an unspecified future day at a 2008 summit in Bucharest, adding that He said he had to move on.
“Otherwise, this issue will continue to poison the atmosphere of continental Europe,” she said.
Rubio is addressing European concerns
Before talks take place, US President Donald Trump’s new administration has ruled out Ukraine’s NATO membership last week, saying it’s an illusion to believe Kiev can regain it, and has reassured it last week. He was accused by European politicians of handing over concessions. 20% of the territory currently under Russian control.
European leaders held an emergency meeting in Paris on Monday in an attempt to present a united front in a war that responded with severe sanctions against Russia.
Addressing concerns in Ukraine and Europe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday claimed that no one was on the sidelines, saying, “The European Union has sanctions so they’ll have to be at the table at some point. [on Russia] It is similarly imposed. ”
Zelenskyy said the US, Ukraine and Europe should participate in discussions on Kyiv’s security assurance to ensure fair peace.
Turkish President Erdogan recalls how he met in Istanbul in 2022 just weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, and as the “ideal host” of talks to end the war I offered to do so.
“Turkier will be the ideal host of possible consultations between Russia, Ukraine and the United States in the near future,” he added, adding that the Istanbul speech was “an important reference point, and parties will enter into the agreement. “It was the closest platform.”
The talk in Riyadh has been escalating with fierce battles along the frontline of over 1,000km (620 miles), and the Russian army is slowly and steadily moving forward. Ukraine also seized control of a small section of Russia’s Kursk region in an astonishing attack that crossed the border in August 2024.
