Zoox recalls 258 self-driving car software via unexpected brakes

Zoox, an autonomous driving unit on Amazon, has issued a voluntary recall of 258 vehicles due to issues with autonomous driving systems that could cause unexpected and severe destruction.

The recall is the Toyota Highlanders equipped with Zoox technology after the agency received two reports of a motorcyclist crashing into the back of a Zoox vehicle last May, following a preliminary investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The initial investigation found that in both cases Zoox vehicles operate with an autonomous system involved.

Zoox only recalls vehicles equipped with the software version released by November 5th, 2024. The company said in an NHTSA report that it addressed the issue with a software update by November 7, 2024.

Neither event occurred with Zoox’s dedicated Robotaxi, built without a steering wheel or pedals, but Zoox says they’ll include those vehicles in the recall as some of them are equipped with similar software.

Zoox is currently testing a limited number of custom Robotaxis in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Last June, Zoox shared plans to begin testing the technology in Austin and Miami.

The recall comes after a 2023 cruise safety incident and years after years of strengthened scrutiny from regulators.

Last year, Waymo issued a voluntary recall of 672 Jaguar I-Pace Robotaxis following several reported safety incidents, including when it collided with a utility pole.

This article has been updated with new information on Zoox. The heading has been changed to reflect the nature of Zoox’s software recalls.
