The death of a Southern university student is being investigated as a possible act of fraternity haze

BATONS ROUGE, Louisiana (AP) — The death of a 20-year-old Southern college student in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is being investigated by local law enforcement as a possible act of fraternity haze, school officials confirmed Wednesday by the Associated Press.

Caleb Wilson, who passed away on February 27th, is a junior mechanical engineering at Southern University and A&M College, and was a member of the school’s famous marching band.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. International President of Ricky L. Lewis, Ricky L. Lewis, said in a written statement issued Friday, the organization recognizes the agency as “full support for its efforts to launch an investigation into this tragic incident and seek the truth.”

“We know that many of you may be asking questions, and we are actively working to gather accurate information,” Lewis said. It was unclear whether Wilson was a member of the fraternity.

Additional details, including Wilson’s cause of death, were not available yet. Police in Baton Rouge have not commented on the investigation.

Published in a statement from Wilson’s family WAFB-TV, The student was described as an “extraordinary person,” a “bright and talented young man with a promising future before him.”

“We are committed to ensuring that other families must endure such tragedy in search of the truth about Caleb’s death,” the family said.

Wilson was the trumpet player for the marching band known as the “Human Jukebox” who recently performed at the Super Bowl. In a statement on the band’s Facebook page, Wilson was described as a talented, dedicated and cheerful soul who “put his passion” in his research and music.

“I will never forget his energy, spirit and impact on those around him,” the post read.

During the band’s performance at one of New Orleans’ Mardi Gras Parades over the weekend, members performed Stevie Wonder’s “Love Light in Flight” in honor of Wilson.

“This is not just a performance, it promises that tributes, farewells and Caleb’s legacy will live on,” the band was posted on Facebook, with a video of the performance posted.

After Wilson’s death, historically black universities have suspended recruitment activities for all clubs, including those related to Greek life indefinitely. On Tuesday, the university announced its own internal investigation and student judicial process on “suspects of the Hayes incident.”

An organization on campus said that organizations violating anti-scattering policies face “quickly disciplinary sanctions,” according to a university statement.
