X sues India over “unlimited censorship”

Elon Musk-owned social media platform X is suing the Indian government and accusing the country’s IT ministry of illegally extending its authority to remove online content, Reuters reported Thursday.

X has long been plaguing chas with government orders to remove or block domestic content, such as during farmers’ protests last year. Ultimately, legal assignments were also submitted, citing the risks of substantial penalties, in accordance with these executive orders. Now, through new lawsuits, we are further strengthening our opposition to state censorship efforts.

According to a court filing earlier this month, the company accused the Indian government of creating an illegal mechanism through websites that social media companies should check regularly, allowing “countless” civil servants to execute or block content.

According to Reuters, X’s lawsuit alleges that the mechanism “does not meet India’s legal safeguards regarding the removal of content that is issued in cases of sovereignty or harm to public orders and that requires orders such as surveillance of strict supervisory senior staff.

X claims to create an “unacceptable parallel mechanism” that will cause “unlimited censorship of Indian information,” according to a report submitted by the press. The company said it hopes to use legal routes to quash the directive.

A brief hearing on the case was held earlier this month, Reuters also reported, but no ruling was made. Another hearing is scheduled for next week at the Southern High Court of Karnataka.
