On Monday, Apple announced that it will be offering lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio to its AirPods Max headphones when using the included USB-C cable.
With this upcoming update, AirPods Max Headphones will unlock 24-bit 48 kHz lossless audio to maintain the quality of the original recording. Lossless audio is also expanded to personalized spatial audio “to provide a more musically accurate, uncompressed, immersive experience.”
Users can listen to over 100 million songs on Lossless Audio using Apple Music.
When it comes to Ultra-low Latency audio, Apple says that AirPods Max is suitable for music production. USB-C cable allows AirPods Max users to create and mix personalized spatial audio and head tracking. This means that artists can record and mix music without losing audio quality, Apple says.
Gamers also benefit from ultra-low latency audio, as AirPods Max reduces latency.
Lossless and ultra-low latency audio will be available in April as a free firmware update for iOS 18.4, iPados 18.4 and Macos Sequoia 15.4 on AirPods Max using USB-C.
The new feature is available only for AirPods Max using USB-C, not the lightning version of the headphones.
