PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine school officials said Thursday they would not follow a proposed agreement from President Donald Trump’s administration that would ban transgender athletes from participating in women’s sports.

The U.S. Department of Health, Welfare and Welfare said earlier this month that the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principal Association and the high school were all inside. Violation of Title IX For the participation of trans athletes. The federal investigation came after the release between Trump and the Democratic Maine government. Janet Mills About the subject.

The Health Department gave the facility 10 days to comply with a voluntary agreement to resolve the issue by banning athletes. The Principals Association, which oversees high school sports in 51 state and school districts, including Greely High School, said neither would follow the agreement.

The federal health department cited Greeley High School, located outside of Portland, Cumberland, for reports that transgender students have won the girls’ track competition. The district said in a letter to the community Thursday that it was not compliant because it was “compliant with state laws and Maine human rights laws.”

The district’s statement read: “Thank you to our students: for your maturity, perseverance and dedication to learning through these distractions. Please continue to lead.”

The Maine Principals Association said in a statement that it was “bound to laws including the Maine Human Rights Act, which reflects our participation policies.” A spokesman for the Maine Department of Education introduced the issue to the state Attorney General’s Office but did not respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also did not respond to requests for comment. The department said in a statement earlier this month: “We hope that the Maine Department of Education, the Maine Principal Association and Greeley High School will work with us to reach an agreement to restore fairness in women’s sports.”

Mills and Trump Sparring Last month, during a governor’s meeting at the White House, he discussed the subject matter. Trump during the meeting I was threatened If the state fails to comply with an executive order banning transgender athletes in sports, it withdraws federal funds from Maine.

Mills replied: “We will meet you in court.”

The U.S. Education Bureau has since concluded that Maine could violate IX’s anti-discrimination law and face Department of Justice prosecution.
