An influential group of cross-party lawmakers will look into the business event sector and propose recommendations to the government as part of the investigation by the Professional Culture Media and Sports Selection Committee.

Dame Caroline Dinenage MP (pictured) was held at Savoy Place in Westminster at the closing address at the Business of Events Global Policy Forum held in IET London yesterday (April 1) at IET Savoy Place.

A highly broken investigation into the UK business events sector has been selected as one of five proposed select committee “Play of Play” surveys. Sessions are planned later this year, and events and exhibition industries will be invited to provide evidence.

Dame Dinenage said: “My committee wants to understand the challenges, growth potential and how to avoid falling behind our international competitors. If we can’t jump on the opportunity to grow this sector, the success of the business events sector is essential to the continued success of all CMS sectors. We encourage governments to take the necessary actions to support the growth of this thriving industry.”

Event Business (TBOE), Event Industry Alliance (EIA) and ACC Liverpool each made the proposed proposals, asking DCMS to investigate the event sector as part of a one-month bidding process where they saw 256 applications from a wide range of other industries.

The announcement that Dame Dinenage will close the RX-sponsored forum began with a keynote address by Chris Bryant MP, Minister of Media, Tourism and Creative Industry, on how business events will play a key role in the UK tourism action plan.

Other notable speakers on the forum include political commentators Daniel Finkelstein of Lord, Mike Wood MP of Kingswinford and South Staffordshire, and members of the event’s All-Party Parliamentary Group.

Deep in the UK exhibition and exhibition sector, RX’s UK Managing Director Kelly Prince and Manchester Central CEO Lorihoinks, explored untapped opportunities and emerging trends. Meanwhile, DMO panelists from Belfast, Glasgow and Manchester joined Paul Black at Visitbritain/Meet Ingland to discuss the evolving role of Convention Bureaux in today’s competitive landscape.
