Gaza’s small Christian community lamented the death of Pope Francis, who maintained close and consistent video contact with Palestinian followers during the war that continued to devastate the enclave.

Since the outbreak of the battle between Israel and Hamas in October 2023, Francis has been regularly referred to as a Christian of Gaza.

“I was always waiting to hear the Holy Father’s words. I was watching him on television and through the screen. He gave us hope with his message and prayer.”

“We felt we were living for his prayers and blessings. Every day he renewed hope for the end of war and bloodshed. His prayers remain with us for peace in the land of peace.

“I wish I could participate in prayer at the Nativity Church and the Holy Grave Church,” he added, referring to the occupied ancient churches of Bethlehem in Jerusalem.

“With the passing of the Pope, we feel that the light of love and peace in Gaza has faded,” said George Ayad, 67, from Al-Sahaba.

“The Vatican is far away, but his voice has always reached our hearts. He never stopped seeking peace and justice.

“In the pain and choking blockade we endured, we stuck to his words as a sign of hope. The Pope never forgot Gaza in his prayers.
