Austin, Texas (AP) – City leaders of Ubarde, Texas have approved a $2 million settlement for the families of victims in 2022 Rob Elementary School Shootingwhen one of the countless cases first led to financial compensation.
The attorney for the family first announced terms of the settlement with the city in May 2024, and was approved by Uvalde City Council on Tuesday night.
The settlement with the city would spread $2 million among the 21 families of victims killed in one of the deadliest school shootings in US history, saying that her daughter Jackie was one of the 19 fourth-graders killed by gunmen. Two teachers were also killed.
The lawsuit addresses a failed law enforcement response by demanding city police officers for enhanced training. It will also expand mental health services available to families and Greater Areas, setting May 24th as the annual memory day and establishing a permanent monument at City Plaza.
“This is a small victory in a bigger battle and a lot of injustice we still experience,” Cazales told The Associated Press. “I didn’t really care about money.”

Uvalde Mayor Hector Ruevano said the city’s settlement includes a “restoration justice initiative for families,” but refused to discuss the details. He had not said why it took him nearly a year to approve the previously announced deal.
“The city of Uvalde is committed to honoring memories of lost lives, the families of the victims, the survivors and those affected by this tragedy,” Ruevano said.
