ELIZABETH, N.C. (AP) — One person has been killed and six others injured in a shooting at a small university in eastern North Carolina, prompting a campus lockdown early Sunday, the university said.
The filming occurred at the heart of Elizabeth City State University’s campus following Yardfest, the final event of a week-long Vikingfest celebration of a historic black university, the school said in a statement.
The 24-year-old man, who was not a student, was declared dead. His identity was not released immediately until he withheld notice of his family, the statement said.
Four people were injured by bullets, including three students, while two other students were injured during the uproar. None of the injuries were considered life-threatening. All injured people were taken to hospital for treatment, the statement said.
The call to campus police was featured by a university spokesman who did not immediately return a phone message.
“The University is deeply saddened by this meaningless act,” the University said in a previous statement.
The lockdown was later lifted, and the university increased its campus-wide patrol as a precaution. Access to the center of the campus remained restricted later on Sunday.
The university has 2,300 students, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of Norfolk, Virginia.
