Gainesville, Fla. (AP) – The University of Florida Councillors’ Conference Committee approved Tuesday Santa Ono To become the next leader of Florida’s flagship university, you need another vote before it becomes official.

Former University of Michigan president, Ono needs approval from the governing body of the State University System before becoming the 14th dean of the University of Florida.

“The energy here at the University of Florida is clear and I am eager to join the incredible students, faculty and staff at Gator Nation,” Ono said in a statement.

The school’s board of trustees will select the president and appointments will be subject to confirmation by the Florida Governor’s Committee in accordance with state law.

Ono will replace Kent Fuchs, who became the school’s interim president last summer after former U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse resigned. Sasse left the US Senate, where he represented Nebraska, and became the university president in 2023.

Sasse announced in July that he had quit his job to concentrate on his family after his wife was Diagnosis of epilepsy.
