MANSHETER, England (AP) — Manchester City Manager Pep Guardiola was awarded an honorary degree from the University of Manchester on Monday to recognize his contributions on the field since joining the club in 2016.
Guardiola received his Honorary Doctoral Degree by the University Prime Minister ceremony To celebrate his success with City, including leading his team to six Premier League titles and Champions League, in the community, particularly to his Guardiola Sala Foundation.
“I spent nine years here and it became a home,” Guardiola said. “People, culture, my incredible football club, my colleagues…it’s all so special to me and my family.
“When I arrived here in 2016, I had no idea how much time I would spend here. The way this city accepted me made everything simple. The time here is beautiful.”
Professor Duncan Ivison, the university’s president and vice-prime minister, described Guardiola as “a winner who inspired millions of people through his success as an innovator and manager.”
“He played a major role in making Manchester a global success story,” he said.
