In an effort to reduce traffic lethality, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has directed the state to remove “rainbow crossings.”
Kea Wilson, who writes for Streetsblog USA, points out that Duffy’s letter to the governor tried to deal with traffic deaths on arterial roads. “Furthermore, supporters pointed out that many American arteries are incredibly lacking at intersections that never bother to double the horizontal mural.”
Some evidence that some non-traditional crosswalk critics say it can reduce safety indicates that brighter, more colorful crosswalk treatments can actually improve safety. “Many supporters actually add rainbow crossings to the list of recommended markings on MUTCD, and other revised versions, such as urging traffic engineers to install frequently and protected crossings by nearby arteries, as they could save lives.”
