One in three US adults are regularly sleep deprived, driving the demand for tools that can monitor, analyze and enhance rest. Established in 2014, eight Sleep offers AI-powered Sleep Tech products that promise to turn beds into preventive medical devices.

The New York-based startup announced Tuesday it has raised a fresh $100 million round from investors including HSG, Valor Equity Partners, Founders Fund, Y Combinator, Ferrari F1 driver Charles Leclerc and athletes such as McLaren F1 CEO.

In this round, eight sleep totaled around $260 million, Pitchbook estimates. Previously, it raised a $86 million Series C in 2021 by investors who allocated a $500 million money valuation. The eight sleep said its ratings have doubled since the last round, but did not disclose details.

“When you successfully execute your AI roadmap, launch it internationally and develop condition-specific interventions, achieve unicorn status naturally follows,” Alexandra Zatarain, co-founder and CMO of Eight Sleep, told TechCrunch.

8 provide smart mattresses that integrate software and AI to track and enhance sleep quality. Its flagship product, Pod, offers features such as sleep stage measurements, heart rate, breathing patterns, and movement. Use these insights to automatically adjust temperature, elevation and stiffness. According to the company, it can also detect snoring and automatically increase the base accordingly.

The company has generated more than $500 million in POD sales, has increased revenues by 10 times since its launch in 2019, gathering insights from over 1 billion hours of recorded sleep data.

Eight people employing over 100 full-time staff are expanding beyond the pod with sleep agents. It aims to leverage large-scale language models to create thousands of digital twins for each user, predicting results and optimizing nighttime recovery. This approach shifts sleep techniques from reactive tracking to aggressive, personalized interventions, Zatarain said.

Sleep Tech Market features a range of competitors, ranging from wearable devices such as Oura, Fitbit and Apple, to medical-focused companies such as Resmed, and smart mattresses and sleep surface makers such as Sleep Number and Chillis Sleep.

Eight Core Dhidheritor, Autopilot, says, “Builds a personal blueprint from the night and continuously adapts to account for seasonality, travel, stress, training, illness and even worse nights.

The startup will use new funds to accelerate the growth of the health sector and build on the pod’s health monitoring capabilities. With the introduction of health checks, the system can monitor cardiovascular and breathing patterns with up to 99% accuracy without the need for wearable devices.

“We are not going to replace your doctor, but we provide you with high-precision health monitoring every night, so you can act early if trends change. Over time, this data can complement your healthcare.”

The recently launched 8-person hot flash mode employs AI-driven cooling to alleviate menopause symptoms. We are also working on contactless solutions for sleep apnea. The company is pursuing FDA approval and will utilize POD’s real-time biometric surveillance to provide personalized interventions.

Currently, eight sleep has been shipped to more than 30 countries, including Canada, the UK and EU countries, Australia, Mexico and the United Arab Emirates, and are currently planning to expand to China. The CMO told TechCrunch that China, one of the world’s largest consumer markets, is seeing an increase in the medical middle class, prioritizing sleep and overall health.

Zatarain said that with regard to sensitive health data, the company complies with regulations for each locale, including data storage.

“Privacy is fundamental. All data is encrypted, not sold, and is completely private. It is GDPR and CCPA compliant. Unlike many devices, it does not use microphones. The biometric sensors do not have embedded in decorations, invasive, passive, and high-precision insights,” Zatarain said.
