The newly released OpenAI Atlas web browser has been found to be susceptible to prompt injection attacks that can jailbreak its omnibox by disguising a malicious prompt as a seemingly benign URL.

“The omnibox (a combination of address and search bar) interprets input as either a URL to navigate to or as a natural language command to an agent,” NeuralTrust said in a report released Friday.

“We have identified a prompt injection technique that disguises malicious instructions as URLs, which Atlas treats as authoritative ‘user intent’ text, enabling harmful actions. ”

Last week, OpenAI released Atlas, a web browser with built-in ChatGPT functionality to assist users with web page summarization, inline text editing, and agent functionality.

The attack, outlined by the artificial intelligence (AI) security firm, allows an attacker to take advantage of the browser’s lack of hard boundaries between trusted user input and untrusted content by turning a crafted prompt into a URL-like string, potentially turning Omnibox into a jailbreak vector.

The intentionally malformed URL begins with “https” and features domain-like text “my-wesite.com,” followed by embedded natural language instructions to the agent, such as:

If an unwitting user types the aforementioned “URL” string into the browser’s omnibox, the browser will treat the input as a prompt to the AI ​​agent since it will not pass URL validation. This causes the agent to execute the embedded instructions and redirect the user to the website mentioned in the prompt instead.

In a hypothetical attack scenario, a link like the one shown above could be placed behind a “Copy Link” button, effectively allowing an attacker to direct a victim to a phishing page under their control. Even worse, it may contain hidden commands that delete files from connected apps like Google Drive.

“Omnibox prompts are treated as trusted user input, so they may require fewer checks than content from a web page,” said security researcher Marti Giorda. “The agent may initiate actions unrelated to the destination, such as visiting sites selected by the attacker or executing tool commands.”

The disclosure comes as SquareX Labs has demonstrated that malicious extensions can be used to spoof the AI ​​assistant’s sidebar within the browser interface, stealing data or tricking users into downloading and running malware. This technology is codenamed “AI Sidebar Spoofing.” Alternatively, a malicious site could natively include a fake AI sidebar, bypassing the need for a browser add-on.

The attack begins when a user enters a prompt in the spoofed sidebar, and the extension hooks into the AI ​​engine and returns malicious instructions when a specific “trigger prompt” is detected.

The extension uses JavaScript to overlay a fake sidebar on top of the legitimate sidebar in Atlas and Perplexity Comet, potentially tricking users into “visiting malicious websites, executing data exfiltration commands, and even installing a backdoor that provides the attacker with persistent remote access to the victim’s entire machine,” the company said.

Immediate injection as a cat-and-mouse game

Prompt injection is a major concern for AI assistant browsers. Malicious attackers can use white text on a white background, HTML comments, or CSS tricks to hide malicious instructions on web pages that can be parsed by agents to execute unintended commands.

These attacks are troubling and pose systemic challenges because they manipulate the underlying decision-making processes of AI to turn the agent against the user. In recent weeks, browsers such as Perplexity, Comet, and Opera Neon have been found to be susceptible to attack vectors.

One of the attack methods detailed by Brave found that it was possible to use pale light blue text on a yellow background to hide prompt injection instructions within an image. This instruction is then processed by the Comet browser, possibly through optical character recognition (OCR).

“One of the emerging risks that we are very carefully investigating and mitigating is prompt injection, where an attacker hides malicious instructions on a website, email, or other source in an attempt to trick an agent into doing something unintended,” Dane Stuckey, OpenAI’s chief information security officer, said in a post on X, acknowledging the security risks.

“An attacker’s goal can be as simple as biasing an agent’s opinion while shopping, or as serious as an attacker trying to get an agent to capture and compromise personal data, such as sensitive information from emails or credentials.”

Stuckey also noted that the company has conducted extensive red teaming, introduced model training techniques that reward models that ignore malicious instructions, and implemented additional guardrails and safety measures to detect and block such attacks.

Despite these safeguards, the company also acknowledged that rapid injection remains an “unresolved and unresolved security issue” and that threat actors will continue to expend time and effort to devise new ways to make AI agents fall victim to such attacks.

Perplexity similarly describes malicious prompt injection as a “front-line security issue that the entire industry is grappling with,” and says it takes a multi-layered approach to protect users from potential threats such as hidden HTML/CSS instructions, image-based injections, content disruption attacks, and goal hijacking.

“Rapid injection represents a fundamental shift in how we must think about security,” the report said. “With the democratization of AI capabilities, we are entering an era where everyone needs protection from increasingly sophisticated attacks.”

“The combination of real-time detection, security enhancements, user controls, and transparent notifications creates redundant layers of protection and significantly raises the bar for attackers.”
