Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa has announced a series of dramatic policies as he is trying to predict a strong image before the federal election.

On Monday, Social Media Platform X posted that NOBOA would impose 27 % of tariffs on imports from Mexico.

Later, in his second message two hours later, he revealed that he would seal the three -day border in response to the unspecified threat from the armed group.

“In response to an attempt by armed groups to make the country unstable, the border will be closed from Saturday, February 8 to Monday, February 10,” Nova wrote.

He also announced the promotion to “militaryly” the port of Ecuador and to strengthen military existence at the border of the country.

The announcement is that conservative Novore faces a close bidding on Sunday against rivals from Ruisa Gonzales, a rival in the 2023 presidential election and Left -wing Civic Revolutionary Movement.

Critics also stated that it reflected the policy and phrase of President Donald Trump, who won the re -election in 2024 in 2024, a rigid agenda of border security.

Continued feud with Mexico

Trump and Nova share a common target of Mexico, a threat to tariffs.

In November, after the victory of the election, Trump announced that it will impose 25 % tariffs on Mexican products imported into the United States. These tariffs have been temporarily suspended for 30 days on Monday.

Trump has justified this movement, saying that it is a leverage necessary to prevent the United States from preventing the flow of immigrants and drugs that have not been documented by Mexico. He also quoted the need to protect US industries.

NOBOA took the same tack on Monday, when 27 % of imports from Mexico imposed an import tax.

Reflecting Trump’s phrase, Nova said that although he continues to commit free trade with Mexico, it is not “abuse.”

“I will check the position to sign a free trade agreement with Mexico,” says Ecuador.

“But until it happens, we aim to apply 27 % of tariffs to imported products, promote our industry and secure fair treatment of producers. “

Ecuador and Mexico have recently shared tension and have led to breaking diplomatic relations last year.

The break was the result of the raids led by the Ecuador Police at the Mexican Embassy in Kito. Inside, police officers arrested former President Ecuadol, accused of corruption, but acknowledged exile in Mexico.

International law prohibits local police from taking laws in the embassy without permission. The raid was accused by most governments in the region.

Close election

Apart from that, Nova has revealed on Monday that Ecuador has successfully completed a free trade agreement with Canada.

“After a few months of intense negotiations, our government has achieved what we have no other. Ecuador will sign a trade agreement with Canada,” he wrote.

The Ecuador leader faces a tight race on Sunday. The average of polling is about 38 % of the voting shows novoa at the lead, and Gonzales is 32 % second.

In other words, NOBOA may have the majority necessary to avoid leakage with Gonzales in April.

Novore, a heir of the banana industry, wants to secure a four -year term after becoming the president in November 2023.

His current term is only 18 months. He won the snap election and finished his former president Girermo Rasso.

He gained power as a candidate for law and ordering, but Novore has a hard time dealing with criminal groups escalating violence despite a series of measures that give troops and police. did.

Since Ecuador depends on hydroelectric power, harsh drought caused his shortage of energy during his short resignation.

Rolling Blackout is a source of frustration and protest against the government.
