The key developments of the 1,098th day of the full-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine are:

The situation for Thursday, February 27th is as follows:

Fineting

The Russian guided bomb killed five people and injured eight people in Kostiantinibka in eastern Ukraine, Vadim Firashkin, governor of the Donetsk region, said. Two more people were killed in another attack on Kyiv, according to state news outlet Ukrinform. The Russian Ministry of Defense said it shot down 19 drones in one night in the nation and annexed Crimea, with other authorities reporting one person dead in the Belgorod region. Governor Maikora Kalashnik said one person was killed in Ukraine after the drone attack on the Kiev region. Previously, at least four were reported to have been injured and several homes fired from the attack. The dead body was found in one of the houses that were lit. The Ukrainian air force said it had shot down 110 of 177 Russian drones following the overnight attack. Another 66 people were lost and unable to reach their target, according to the Air Force. The Russian Ministry of Defense said Moscow forces have reclaimed two settlements in the West Kursk region of Russia, which had been previously seized by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian forces said they successfully acquired the village of Kotrin in eastern Donetsk after launching a counterattack. The village is located near the main transport arteries and Pokrovsk, the important logistics hub of Ukraine. The Ukrainian forces also said they attacked Russian Chupus Oil Refinery on the Black Sea coast and two military airfields in Crimea, where Russia is occupied. According to the military, 40 explosions have been recorded from the oil refinery.

Politics and diplomacy

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said US and Russian officials will meet in Istanbul, Turkier, to discuss the recovery of the foreign policy committees of both countries. Dozens of diplomats at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva came out of the session to celebrate the third anniversary of Moscow’s invasion of Kiev during a speech by Russian vice minister Sergei Versinin. Ukrainian Prime Minister Dennis Schmichal confirmed that both Ukraine and the US have prepared a final version of the agreement on Ukrainian rare earth minerals. Schmichal said the US supported Ukraine’s efforts to obtain security guarantees. The AFP reported that the latest draft of the Kyiv-Washington mineral trade dropped all provisions related to the initial demand for $500 million repayments for US aid provided during the administration of former US President Joe Biden. The US declined to co-host a joint statement at the World Trade Organization that denounced Russia’s war on Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing two unnamed sources. This is the first time the US has not supported the annual statement since the war began. Ukrainian President Voldymeierzelensky said the success of our mineral trade with us will depend on US President Donald Trump. He also said that the framework’s economic contract with the US is ready, but its security guarantees have not yet been decided. Zelenskyy confirms that the final mineral trade does not include “$500 million, $3500 billion, or $100 billion” of debt and brands conditions unfair to Ukraine. He insisted that Kiev would not even accept “10 cents of debt repayment.” Following Zelenskyy’s comments, White House officials said they were invited to Zelenskyy to “make no sense” to meet Trump if Ukrainian leaders didn’t think the deal was finalized. At the first cabinet meeting, Trump said it wasn’t up to the US to provide security assurances to Ukraine, but Europe needs to step up. Trump sidelined Ukrainian hopes to join NATO again, suggesting that Kiev’s desire to join the military alliance may have invaded Russia into Ukraine.
