Amazon has denied that it is shutting down Windery, a podcast studio that it acquired in late 2020. Bloomberg reported Monday that the company has closed its studios and cut 110 jobs.
Amazon told TechCrunch that Wondery will continue to develop creator-led podcasts under the new team The Wondery brand. What’s changing is that the company is separating the teams that oversee the teams developing creator-driven shows that will help the Wondery narrative podcast effort.
Townery is a Dr. It combines podcasts such as Death and American Scandal with Audible.
“The podcast landscape has evolved significantly over the past few years, particularly with the rise of video forward creator-driven content,” Amazon said in an emailed statement.
“These changes reflect that evolution and streamline the way in which the wonders are further integrated into Amazon. By making these changes, we can better support viewers in monetizing content across multiple channels, expanding brand IP and simplifying advertisers’ processes.
Despite securing a well-known name in the business, the company is currently shifting its strategy to compete better with rivals such as Spotify and YouTube, as the podcasting industry adopts video format.
Update: This article was updated to reflect Amazon’s rejection of reporting that Wondery had been closed.
