At least 35 people have been killed and dozens of other people have been injured in Israel’s attack on a residential block in Gaza’s Shujaia district, medical sources told Al Jazeera.
The Gaza Health Ministry said it hopes the death toll from Wednesday’s attack in northern Gaza will rise as civil defense teams and residents desperately dig out to find dozens of missing residents believed to be trapped under the tile rub.
Israeli forces said the attack targeted senior Hamas fighters but did not give him his name, claiming that several measures were taken to reduce harm to civilians.
Shujayea resident Ayub Salim, 26, told Al Jazeera that some of the victims were “broken” by attacks with “multiple missiles” that had been flew sh shotguns.
“Dust and massive destruction filled the entire place. We couldn’t see anything. [heard] People scream and panic,” he said.
Ibrahim Al-Kariri of Al Jazeera reported from Shujayaia that civil defense forces and local residents gathered to attract civilians trapped from under the tile rub. Most of the victims came to live in the block after being “forced evacuated,” he said.
Civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassador said it would be extremely difficult for rescuers to reach “dozens” trapped under the tile rub as they lacked proper equipment as a result of the blockade of Israel’s Palestinian territory, adding that more than 60 people were injured.
In a report from Deir El-Balah, Hind Khoudary of Al Jazeera said a doctor at Al Alirab Hospital in Gaza city told her that Medic lacked medication to treat “burned” victims. Hospitals urgently need a blood supply.
Paramedics, already suffering from a shortage of fuel and medical supplies, were unable to reach the Shujaya people due to the scale of the destruction.
Israel resumed air bombings in Gaza on March 18 after a nearly two-month ceasefire with Hamas, and later expanded ground attacks across its territory. More than 1,400 people have been killed since Israel resumed the attack, Palestinian health officials said.
Mediators Egypt, Qatar and the United States attempted to resume consultations on extending the ceasefire, but were not successful.
Israeli military spokesman Avichey Adrie said his latest business in Gaza has eliminated “gunners,” destroying Shujayaia’s weapons and destroying Rafa’s “tunnel openings and infrastructure.”
Palestinian medical sources said the attacks took place amid the growing hunger crisis to block Israel from supplying Gaza, targeted homes, shelters and camps.
Medical sources told Al Jazeera that at least 10 people were killed in attacks across Gaza on Wednesday, raising the daily death toll to at least 45.
Hamas, the armed group that controls Gaza, has denounced the “ti-sick” responses of Arab and Muslim countries, saying “with the support of the US, the ongoing massacre of our people is a taint on the face of the international community.”
Marwan Vishara, senior political analyst at Al Jazeera, described the attack as “wild bar.” “The way these attacks are carried out emphasizes that Israel wants to ethnically cleanse Gaza,” he said.
Since late March, Israel has ordered people to move away from the edge of Gaza to create what they call “security zones.” The inhabitants fear that their purpose is to permanently depopulate the territory’s belt.
According to an Al Jazeera tally based on Israeli statistics, Israel launched a war with Gaza in October 2023 after Hamas led an attack on southern Israel, killing at least 1,139 people and capturing about 250 prisoners.
Palestinian authorities said Israel’s attack on Gaza killed more than 50,800 Palestinians.
