The crash took place on the route between Uyuni and Korchani cities as one of the vehicles turned into an approaching lane.

At least 37 people have been killed and dozens more injured in a crash involving two buses in Bolivia’s West Potosi region, police and local authorities said.

The accident occurred on Saturday at 7am (11am) when one of the vehicles turned towards an approaching lane on a route between Uyuni and Korchani cities.

Uyuni is a major tourist attraction and the gateway to Uyuni’s Salah, the world’s largest salt flat, over 10,000 square kilometers (3,900 square miles).

“This fatal accident led to 39 people being injured and 37 people losing their lives in four hospitals in Uyuni town,” a spokesman for the Department Police Command in Potosi told reporters.

Police officers work to identify those killed and those who were injured and hospitalized, the spokesman added.

Handouts released by Bolivian police show people checking the wreckage of a bus that collided with another bus on a highway near Uyuni, Bolivia on March 1, 2025. It said that a crash was made on a highway in southern Bolivia early on March 1, 2025, killing at least 37 children and 30 people. One of the buses headed to Oruro, where one of Latin America’s most important carnival celebrations is now taking place.

Images taken by Radio Uyuni show that officers removed survivors from the steel debris.

A police spokesman said one of the two drivers who both survived the crash was found by alcohol-consuming passengers.

Bolivia’s mountainous regions, unmaintained, unsupervised small roads are some of the deadliest roads in the world, killing an average of 1,400 people each year.
