(Image credit: Rubinobs/noirlab/slac/nsf/doe/aura)Simple factsWhat it is: Trifid Nebula (Messier20)Somewhere: Sagittarius is 5,000 light years away. When shared: June 23, 2025This week, researchers revealed their long-awaited debut images from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile. This magnificent image is also known as the Messier 20, alongside one of the most detailed snapshots of the space ever taken in the first batch.A cloud of gas and dust, Trifid Nebula is three things at a time. Therefore, its name (“Trifid” means that it is divided into three parts). According to NASA, pink…
One summer night in 1877, American astronomer Asaph Hall looked through a Washington telescope, DC Mars was at the closest point to Earth in orbit, and Hall had one question in his mind. Does the Red Planet have a Moon? After searching multiple times in the thick fog, the hall found not only one but two moons. He named the Greek mythological “terror” and “panic” twins, whose parents are Ares and Aphrodite (Mars and Venus in Roman mythology). But these moons look very different from our own — and scientists still have many questions about their origins.”Fovo and Deimos are part…
A new report from Headwaters Economics warns the dangers of extreme heat to rural residents, wrote Sarah Mellot of Daily Yonder. Extreme heat is often surrounded by urban issues exacerbated by pavement and tall buildings, but rural areas suffer from different challenges when heat waves attack. “Compared to urban residents, rural Americans are twice as likely to have existing health issues, such as diabetes, which exacerbate the risk of emergency heat. Rural workers are more likely to work in high-exposure industries such as agriculture and construction. Meanwhile, the prevalence of manufactured homes in rural areas means that rural residents spend…
Streetsblog NYC’s Sophia Lebowitz is receiving advice from candidates after Zoran Mamdani’s victory in the mayoral primary in New York City. Recognizing Mamdani’s traffic and pedestrian-friendly proposals (including free bus dishes and other bike lanes), Lebowitz says “there are areas where his platform can be made even stronger from a habitable road perspective, so that young leaders look to their previous rivals.” For one, Lebowitz is proposing Director Brad Lander’s proposal to expand the fair fare program. Lander has a more comprehensive plan surrounding micromobility and delivery vehicles, calling for data sharing between the app company’s licensing system and the…
After researchers used computer models to determine its location, they discovered ruins of ancient Roman camps in the Netherlands across the northern frontier of the Empire. The “rare” discovery at a site called Hoog Buurlo shows that Romans were running about 15.5 miles (25 kilometers) south of the camp, across the boundary that ran along the Rhine.”For the Netherlands, this is just the fourth Rome temporary camp, so it’s a very rare discovery,” said Saskia Stevens, an associate professor of ancient history and classical civilization at Utrecht University and a lead researcher on the “Lyme the Rimes” project, who found the…
It appears that Meta hasn’t finished poaching talent from open alleys. Earlier this week, TechCrunch reported that Meta had hired influential Openai researcher Trapit Bansal, and according to the Wall Street Journal, he also hired three other researchers from the company. Currently, the information reports four more meta recruitment from Openai. Researchers Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, Hongyu Ren. The employment comes after the launch of Meta’s Llama 4 AI model in April. (The company was also criticized for the version of the llama that it used in its popular benchmark.) There has been some kind of interaction between…
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin argues that the digital identification approach driven by Sam Altman’s World Project presents a privacy risk. Previously known as World Coin, the World was created under the human tools of Altman and Alex Brania. The organization says it will help distinguish AI agents from humans by scanning the user’s eyes and creating unique identities on the blockchain. In a lengthy post, Buterin noted that the world’s approach to verifying human identity using zero knowledge proofs also protects anonymity, is being investigated by various digital passports and digital ID projects. He then acknowledged using “ZK-wrapped digital IDs”…
For those wondering whether AI agents can truly replace human workers, read the documented blog post “Project Vend” for yourself. Andon Labs, researcher at Anthropic and AI Safety Company, has posted an instance of Claude Sonnet 3.7, responsible for Office vending machines whose mission is to make a profit. And like in the “Office” episode, the cheerfulness continued. They named the AI agent Claudius, equipped with a web browser that allowed them to place product orders, and an email address (which was actually a Slack channel) where customers could request items. Claudius also used slack channels disguised as emails to…
While analyzing radio signals from 10 billion years ago, astronomers have discovered “minihalo” (clouds of energy particles) around distant clusters of galaxies. Unexpected discoveries could further encourage understanding of the early universe. This mini halo is the furthest ever detected, and is located twice as far from Earth as the next largest mini halo. It also contains a huge, strong magnetic field that spans more than 15 times the width of the Milky Way. This finding has been accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters and is available on Preprint Server Arxiv.”It’s amazing to find such a powerful radio signal at…
The FBI and cybersecurity companies are warning that the prolific hacking group known as the scattered spiders is currently targeting the airlines and transportation sector. In a brief statement on Friday shared with TechCrunch, the FBI said it had “recently observed” spider-like cyberattacks, including the airline sector. Executives from the Security Research Unit 42 of Google’s cybersecurity unit Mandiant and Palo Alto Networks said they have witnessed scattered spider cyberattacks targeting the aviation industry. Scattered spiders are primarily a group of English-speaking hackers, usually teenagers and young adults, who are financially motivated to steal and force sensitive data from corporate…
