Columbia University And New York Presbyterian Hospital has agreed to a $750 million settlement of sexual abuse claims by a patient who has been jailed for disgrace, bringing the gross payments of civil cases involving the former doctor, more than $1 billion, according to the plaintiff’s lawyer.
Hadden, now 66, was accused of abusing patients during his decades-long career at the well-known New York City hospitals, including Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the New York Presbyterian. The new settlement, approved by a Manhattan judge on Monday, was in 576 cases against Ivy League schools, hospitals and more in relation to Headden’s abuse, said plaintiffs’ attorney Anthony T. DiPietro.
“This victory is not just for Columbia University victims and survivors, and for all of us who entrust medical care to healthcare providers, not just for the cover-up of the bravely advance of New York Presbyterian Hospital,” DiPietro said in a statement.
“For too long, Columbia and the New York Presbyterian have prioritized protecting patients’ reputations,” he said. “This settlement sends a strong message that we are here to ensure that agencies covering exploitation and abuse are fully responsible for their crimes.”
DiPietro said the average payment to plaintiffs from the new settlement would be around $1.3 million. Columbia previously agreed to a $277 million settlement with more than 200 other plaintiffs over sexual abuse in Hadden, he said.
Colombia confirmed the settlement, but the amount was not Tuesday. Lawyers for the school and the New York Presbyterian did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment.
“As previously announced, Columbia is implementing a multifaceted plan that includes an external investigation, a survivor settlement fund and a series of newly updated patient safety policies and programs to address the abuse of Robert Hadden,” the university said in a statement in response to a statement asking the Associated Press’ message specifically about the $750 million transaction.
“We deeply regret the pain his patients suffered. This reconciliation is another step in our ongoing work and commitment to repairing harm and supporting survivors,” he said. “We praise the survivors for the courage to move forward.”
The New York Presbyterian mentioned questions about the settlement with Columbia and said the school had hired Hadden.
One of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, Laurie Maldonado sued Columbia, New York Presbyterian and Hadden, but said her case was not about money.
“It’s about accountability,” she said in a statement provided by DiPietro. “Columbia University has made sadistic abuse possible, and now they are forced to face the truth. I hope this sends a clear message to all institutions. Survivors are not silenced, and those who protect the abusers are responsible.”
The Associated Press will not usually name a victim of sexual assault unless they move forward publicly, as Maldonado has.
Hadden’s accusers included Evelyn Yang, the wife of former presidential candidate and wife of New York City Mayor Andrew Yang.
During the criminal trial in Hadden, Nine victims testified About how Hadden molested him during gynecological treatment at a prominent hospital since the late 1980s.
In 2012, allegations of misconduct first surfaced during the lawsuit. Hadden was charged with state charges in 2014 as the woman continued to move forward. However, in 2016, Cyrus Vance Jr., then Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, allowed Hadden to plead two low-level felony and misdemeanors.
Some of the women who went to the state prosecutors were furious, but their stories didn’t start to attract public attention until 2017 when the #MeToo movement began to get steam.
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan were charged with a major ju trial in 2020 against Hadden. He was accused of the fact that some patients in his New York office came to the city from other states.
In November 2023, Columbia and the Columbia University Irving Medical Center announced that 6,500 former patients would notify them of federal sexual offence convictions and give victims the opportunity to apply for compensation from A. $100 million settlement fund.
