Convert plastic waste into clean hydrogen and carbon materials

A groundbreaking technology that transforms plastic waste into clean energy and sustainable high value materials.

Every year, the world produces over 300 million tons of plastic. Most of this plastic is used only once before throwing it away. Unfortunately, only about 9% are recycled, 12% burn, and almost 80% are landfills, rivers and oceans. This situation has become one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time. Plastic contamination harms marine life, contaminates soil and water, and enters food chains in the form of microplastics.

At the same time, the world is facing another major challenge: the climate crisis. Clean energy alternatives are needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen (H₂) is widely recognized as one of the most promising solutions. It stores power vehicles, renewable energy, and serves as zero carbon raw materials for the industry. However, 96% of hydrogen is currently produced from fossil fuels. In other words, its production remains a joint source of emissions.

Therefore, we face double problems. Too much plastic waste, contaminating hydrogen production.

Dual Solution: Waste2H2 Project

The European Union-funded Waste2H2 project offers bold and innovative answers to both issues at once. The goal is to develop new technologies that convert plastic waste into clean hydrogen and valuable carbon materials without the emission of greenhouse gases.

How does it work? This process is intended to use a combination of ionic liquids, metal nanoparticles, and microwave irradiation. Together, these technologies decompose plastics in a single step in mild conditions (below 350°C and atmospheric pressure). The result is a clean flow of hydrogen gas and solid carbon nanomaterials.

This is important as it provides two valuable products from waste that normally causes environmental hazards. Hydrogen can be used as a clean fuel or industrial input, but carbon nanomaterials are valuable to sectors such as electronics, aerospace, energy, and sports goods.

Why is this technology different?

Several studies have previously focused on converting plastics to hydrogen. However, it is usually required for existing processes.

High temperatures (often above 750°C). Two or more steps, make them complicated and expensive. A large amount of catalyst that becomes inert quickly due to carbon deposits. Important CO2 emissions.

Waste2H2 has the potential to overcome these challenges thanks to its innovative design.

One step, not two. Microwaves reduce energy consumption. Very efficient hydrogen production (purity > 97%). Easy recovery and reuse of both catalysts and carbon products. Zero or cold-house gas emissions.

This means that this process is not only environmentally friendly, but may be cheaper than existing methods, making it competitive in the energy market.

Benefits for people and planets

The advantages of Waste2H2 go far beyond the laboratory. If successful, the technology is:

Reducing Plastic Pollution: Today, plastics that end in landfills and oceans can be used as valuable resources instead. Clean Energy Provider: Local facilities can produce hydrogen on-site, reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and reduce transportation costs. Supporting the circular economy: Instead of treating plastics as waste, we turn them into energy and useful products. Increase in European industry: Carbon nanomaterials are expensive and difficult to produce using the current methods. Waste2H2 offers a cheaper and environmentally friendly alternative. Help us fight climate change: By eliminating CO₂ emissions from both waste and hydrogen production, this project will directly contribute to climate goals.

The roadmap above

The project was run for four years, during which an international team of scientists and engineers would look like this:

Design and test new ionic liquid-based catalyst systems. Build and operate laboratory-scale prototypes. Study environmental and economic impacts through lifecycle analysis and lifecycle costs. Develop digital models to plan for large-scale plants of the future.

By 2027, Waste2H2 aims to provide proof of concept at the laboratory level (technical preparation level 4). The next step is to pilot the plants first and then expand into commercial facilities.

The long-term vision is ambitious. By 2035, Europe could have multiple waste 2H2 plants that locally produce hydrogen in supermarkets, recycling centres, or industrial sites, for example. This hydrogen can be used for vehicles, industrial or energy storage, but carbon materials serve advanced applications.

High-risk, high-gain project

Waste2H2 is not without major challenges. In fact, the entire project is a huge challenge. Designing ionic liquids that can withstand high temperatures, dissolve plastics and remain stable at the same time is extremely difficult, and preparing efficient, selective and durable catalysts is also very complicated, but the potential benefits are very large and the project is worth the risk.

If successful, Waste2H2 could not only create new technology, but could change the way you think about waste and energy. Instead of viewing plastic as a problem, we view it as a resource of clean energy and advanced materials.

Conclusion

The Waste2H2 project embodies the spirit of innovation and sustainability. By combining cutting-edge chemistry, engineering and environmental science, we propose solutions that can tackle two looming global issues: plastic pollution and climate change.

Simply put, Waste2H2 turns garbage into an additional value product: hydrogen powers the zero carbon economy and strengthens carbon nanomaterials. It shows how science and technology can open up new paths to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future.
