Earth Day is a very important day for the venue as they compete towards the Zero 2050 goal.

To mark this day, Conference News will take a closer look at the sustainability initiatives implemented at venues in the UK, their commitments and the progress they have made so far. It’s a great opportunity to look back on both your achievements and the work you need to drive real change and reach your Net Zero 2050 goals.

Farnborough International

All over the UK, venues are setting increasingly ambitious sustainability goals, with many firmly establishing a path to achieving net zero. Leading the charge is Fernborough International, whose “destination zero” strategy focuses on reducing emissions with renewable and efficient energy, reducing waste, reuse, and partnering with key sustainable suppliers. The venue sent zero waste to landfills, and its 1.2MW solar array now generates more than 30% of its annual electricity needs.

Excel London

Another major player is Excel London. This is working to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Excel has been operating on 100% renewable electricity for over 10 years, landfilling waste. Innovative initiatives such as housing one of the UK’s biggest wurmaries for treating organic waste underline Excel’s creative approach to sustainability.

Sec Glasgow

Scottish Event Campus (SEC) Glasgow has made sustainability a central part of its operations, aiming to achieve net zero by 2030. Following its role as a host for COP26, the SEC sources 100% of its electricity from renewable energy and implements the ISO 20121 sustainable event management system. We mapped our journey to net zero across five key areas: climate, governance, partnerships, people and resources.

Manchester Central

In Manchester, Manchester Central has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The venue was the signer of the Net Zero Carbon Event Pledge and launched a “Our Central Future” sustainability strategy that covers key focus areas such as reducing environmental impacts, strengthening community engagement and promoting greener business practices.

NEC Birmingham

NEC Birmingham was the leader in sustainable venue management targeting carbon neutrality by 2040. Impressively, NEC has achieved zero waste in landfills since 2012 and recently joined the climate pledge to accelerate its net zero efforts. The group is also investing in a 440-acre campus-wide biodiversity initiative, demonstrating a broader commitment to the environment.

Olympia London

Meanwhile, Olympia London is undergoing major redevelopment with sustainability at its heart. Already equipped with 100% renewable energy and recycles 98% of its waste, Olympia is working to achieve net zero by 2050. In particular, energy consumption at venues has been reduced by 50% thanks to the upgraded building management system.

ICC Wales

In Wales, ICC Wales focuses on the integration of sustainability and the natural environment. The venue has planted over 15,000 trees and shrubs to provide all electricity from renewable suppliers, achieve 100% waste diversion from landfills, and promote local biodiversity. Sustainability is carried out through food and beverage services, along with a strong commitment to sourcing local Welsh produce.

QEII London

QEII Center London incorporates sustainability throughout its operations, hosting events such as the Sustainability Live Net Zero and using green event checklists to promote best practices among organizers. The Center’s Sustainability Initiative focuses on promoting environmental awareness, energy efficiency and low waste event delivery.

ACC Liverpool

Finally, ACC Liverpool set a bold target to achieve net zero by 2030. ACC Liverpool, already achieving carbon neutral status in 2023, has introduced air source heat pumps, upgrades to LED lighting, and measurements that have led to a 12% reduction in carbon emissions. It continues to advance with a sustainability strategy that is consistent with the city’s wider climate goals.

These venues show their commitment to achieving net zero by 2050, not only talking about sustainability, but also proves it every day, not just on this Earth Day.
