Yoon Suk-Yeol is already facing an ongoing trial on charges of rebellion against the short imposition of martial law.
South Korean prosecutors have said that South Korean prosecutors have indicted the former president for abuse of power without arrest as political uncertainty continues in the country ahead of the June 3rd presidential election.
This latest indictment on Thursday adds additional legal danger to Yun, who is already facing an ongoing trial on the crime of insurrection brought against him for the short imposition of his martial law last December.
Armed soldiers were deployed to Parliament under the decree, but the order lasted only about six hours as it was voted swiftly by opposition lawmakers. Members of parliament later fired Yoon on the declaration of martial law.
Yun, 64, was stripped of all his power and privileges in April by the Constitutional Court, supporting the move for each. He was soon forced to move out of his presidential residence.
Prosecutors first indicted him in January when he was still president.
“We’ve been ongoing ever since [insurrection] The prosecutor said in a statement Thursday.
The new charges also come as part of an investigation into a bribery allegation involving his wife, Kee-on-hee, and Shaman, accused of receiving a gorgeous gift on behalf of his former First Lady, the day after investigators attacked Yoon’s private residence in Seoul.
If convicted of accusations of rebellion, Yoon could be sentenced to life in prison or death, but South Korea had an unofficial moratorium on its first execution since 1997.
Yoon was the South Korean president who was taken away from office, and the third person was fired each by Congress.
Election from the election
With Yoon not present, South Korea is scheduled to hold a snap election on June 3rd.
South Korea’s Supreme Court on Thursday overturned an earlier ruling that Presidential election frontline Lee Jae-myeon was not violating election laws, but committed a crime while questioning his eligibility for running for president.
Lee said after the verdict that the decision to overturn the innocent verdict in a criminal case was “completely different” to what he had hoped for. He added that he would do whatever people want, not what his political rivals said.
Lee was named the Democratic presidential candidate on Sunday after winning the primary, and has been leading polls for weeks suggesting a double-digit gap for contestants from Yoon’s conservative people’s power parties.
In the meantime, deputy leader Han Duck Saw resigned ahead of the president’s expected run in the SNAP election. Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is expected to stand as a proxy president as a law demand.
