The death occurred in a shootout in a forest area in the southern Jammu region.

At least four police officers and two rebels were killed in a shootout on Indian-controlled territory in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian Army’s New Star squadron said on social media on Saturday morning that the “relentless operation” led to “elimination of two terrorists.”

“We recovered the bodies of three officers and discovered the bodies of two militants lying in the woods with another officer,” he told Reuters, who didn’t want to name them because he wasn’t allowed to speak to the media.

Weapons and ammunition, including two hand-rena bullets, a bulletproof jacket, an empty shell and several magazine attack rifles, were also recovered from the area, officials said.

For decades, rebel groups fought security officials in the region, resulting in thousands of deaths. However, violence has been tapering in recent years.

Still, government data shows that at least 14 security guards were killed in such battles in the first half of 2024, and at least 30 were killed in 2023.

The latest collision

The latest match in the battle in the region began on Thursday in a forested area near Katua city in the Jammu region near the Indian border with Pakistan.

The police chief accused the rebels of the people who were believed to have fled security forces four days ago from security forces.

“We will not sleep until we stop such activities from our neighbors,” Prabhat said, referring to Pakistan.

Kashmir, the majority of Muslims, is at the heart of more than 70 years of hostility between India and Pakistan, claiming that both countries have full control of the region.

However, India regularly accusssssssssssss of pushing fighter jets across Kashmir’s massive, militarized, informal borders to attack Indian security forces.

However, Pakistan has denied the allegations, saying it only supports Kashmir’s fight for self-determination.

Rebel groups have fought for decades to demand Kashmir’s independence or to merge with Pakistan.

However, since 2019, the region has been plagued with rage after New Delhi ended Kashmir’s semi-autonomy, restraining objections, civil liberties, media liberties, and at the same time increasing counter-insurgency operations.

Last November, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi supported the decision to revoke partial autonomy in Jammu and Kashmir after newly elected MPs on the territory called for a recovery.

“Only the constitution of Babasaheb Ambedkar will operate in Kashmir. The power of the world cannot restore Article 370 (partial autonomy) of Kashmir,” Modi said, referring to one of the founding fathers of the Indian Constitution.
