Police say four victims face life-threatening injuries, suggesting that the suspect may have suffered a “psychological emergency.”

German authorities arrested the woman after at least 17 people were injured in a knife attack at a major railway station in a city in northern Hamburg.

At least four victims were injured with life-threatening injuries in the mass stab wound incident Friday evening, according to emergency services.

A spokesman for the Hamburg police said the suspect, a 39-year-old German woman, was arrested at the scene by law enforcement.

The officer “goed closer to her and allowed the woman to be arrested without any resistance,” spokesman Florian Avences told journalists in comments carried by public broadcaster ARD.

“To date, there is no evidence that women may have political motivations,” Avences said.

“In fact, we have the information we want to investigate now: whether she may be experiencing a psychological emergency.”

The suspect was believed to have “acted alone,” Hamburg police said in a post from X.

A spokesman for the Hamburg fire station said four casualties were suffering from life-threatening injuries and revised previous figures.

The suspect told AFP news agency that he was believed to be “opposed to passengers” at the station, a spokesman for the Hanover Federal Police Service, targeting Hamburg.

Images from the scene showed access to a platform at one end of the station where police and people were loaded into ambulances waiting.

Four platforms at the station were closed during investigations, and railway operator Deutsche Bahn said he was “deeply shocked” by the attack. German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz expressed his shock after the attack with a call with the mayor of Hamburg.

Germany has been shaken up in recent months by a series of violent attacks that put security at the top of the agenda.
