These are important events on the 1,185th day of the Russian Ukrainian War.

It’s where things stand on Saturday, May 24th.

Fineting

Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said at least eight people were injured after the Ukrainian capital Kyiv combined a drone and missile attack, and witnesses reported a series of explosions and waves of Russian drones flying through the city. Attacked at dawn, anti-aircraft units were revitalized throughout the Ukrainian capital. Timur Tukachenko, the capital’s military junta chief, said two fires had struck in the city’s Svyatsinsky district. Drone fragments also hit the ground in four districts. Authorities say at least two people have been killed in a city in Odesa, in southern Ukraine, after Russia struck port infrastructure with missiles. Authorities said three people were killed in artillery fires in various regions of the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine, the focus of the war.

Russia accused Ukraine of launching a massive wave of drone attacks of up to 800 people against non-military targets in Moscow and other regions in the past three days, saying it would respond, but it said it was still committed to negotiating peace with Kiev.

The Ukrainian forces said they had been attacked by a battery manufacturing facility in Russia’s Lipetsk region, and that Russian missiles and bomb makers were supplied. He added that the batteries are used in air bombs, cruise missiles and Iskander M ballistic missiles.

A Russian military helicopter crashed near the village of Narishikino in the Oryor region of Russia, killing its crew, Tas, a state communications agency, reported citing the headquarters of the military district in Moscow. A preliminary cause of the crash was a technical malfunction.

Politics and diplomacy

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has announced that Moscow is ready to hand over Ukraine a draft document outlining the terms of the long-term peace agreement after the ongoing prisoner exchange is complete.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sibikh told reporters that Kiev is awaiting Russia’s proposals for a meeting, a ceasefire and meeting between Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Sivyah, cited by Ukrainian media, said he agreed to Kiev’s expansion of such meetings to include President Donald Trump.

Lavrov has questioned the Vatican as a potential location for peace negotiations with Ukraine. Italy said it was ready to hold peace talks after Trump proposed the Vatican as the venue. Italy, the Pope and the United States wanted city-states to host consultations. Russia and Ukraine each released 390 prisoners, saying they would release more in the next few days. This was agreed at a meeting between Russian and Ukrainian officials last week. Putin declared in a televised statement that Russia needs to strengthen its position in the global arms market by increasing its arms exports. German Prime Minister Friedrich Mertz urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to support Western efforts towards the Ukraine ceasefire in his first call with Chinese leaders since Mertz took office this month.

economy

As US credit rating agency Fitch continues to navigate diplomatic tensions and significant erosion of its finances amid the shattering war with Russia, it has confirmed Ukraine’s long-term foreign currency sovereignty rating in “restricted defaults” with “restricted defaults.”

The International Monetary Fund launched a new review of its $15.5 billion programme this week to Ukraine, even if it failed to reach a deal with GDP-related debtors last month.
