On Monday, Google announced an update to its Chrome web browser. It announced that it will introduce AI-generated store reviews to US shoppers with the aim of helping them decide which place is the best place to buy. This feature is available by clicking the icon just to the left of your browser’s web address, but you’ll see a pop-up that notifies consumers of store reputation, such as product quality, shopping, pricing, customer service, and returns.

Currently available in English only, this feature generates summary based on reviews from partners, including Bazaarvoice, Bizrate Insights, Resportion.com, Reseller Ratings, Scamadviser, Trustpilot, Turnto, Yotpo, Verified Reviews, and more.

This feature is initially available to Chrome on the desktop. When contacted for comment, Google was unable to confirm whether or not the AI summary would come to mobile devices or when.

Google says the goal of the summary is to provide a safer and more efficient shopping experience. However, this feature also helps Google compete better with other AI features deployed by Retail Giant Amazon, which uses new technology to summarise product ratings and reviews.

With Google being the first to arrive in years, it faces the threat of potential competition for Chrome’s advantage in the global browser market.

The new AI-powered browsers that drive AI, like Perplexity’s comet, browser companies DIA, Opera Neon, and perhaps Openai’s challenger, are thinking of search giants about how to inject AI directly into their own web browser. For example, Google is developing an AI agent that can control Chrome to take action on your behalf. Additionally, the company recently added support for Gemini AI assistants in Chrome for Gemini subscribers.

The move is part of a broader ongoing initiative at Google and will become a modern shopping platform for consumers.

Already, the company is tapping on AI to help customers find products of interest, get personalized product recommendations, effectively try out clothing, and develop tools for better price tracking, shopping in Google’s AI mode, and AI-powered agent checkout. (The latter two were announced at this year’s Google I/O Developer Conference. Google recently announced that AI mode will unfold this fall.)
